Activity 1.1  The Speaking section contains four separate tasks . (True. There is one Independent task and three Inte- grated tasks. Some students might remember that on earlier versions of the TOEFL iBT test, the Speaking section was longer; however, currently, there are four tasks.)  For the Independent task, you will be expected to speak about an academic subject area typical of a first- year university course . (False. The Independent task will ask you about your opinion or preference about a general topic. You do not need any specialized knowledge.)  You can take notes during the Speaking Section. (True. You can take notes on the lecture excerpts and conversations you hear during the Integrated tasks. You are not required to take notes, but most students find it useful.)  You can have as much time as you need to prepare, but once you start speaking, the timer will start auto- matically. (False. For each task, the preparation time is set, and it is short: You have 15 seconds to prepare for the Independent task, and either 20 or 30 seconds to prepare for the Integrated tasks.)  Your pronunciation does not affect your score on TOEFL Speaking tasks . Responses to both the In- dependent task and the Integrated tasks are judged on several factors, including task completion, vocabu- lary usage, grammatical accuracy, fluency, and pronunciation.)  For the Integrated tasks, you will hear parts of lectures or conversations . In Task 4, you listen to part of a lecture and then answer a question about the lecture.  For the Integrated tasks, you will see photographs of the people speaking . (True . However, the photographs only set the scene, and do not give away any answers .)  The Integrated tasks ask you to give your opinion on a topic that you have heard and read about. (False. You will be asked to state some important points you heard in the listening, but you will not be asked to give your personal opinions.)  For the Independent task, it is important for you to support your opinion with reasons and supporting details or examples . (True. You will be asked to state your opinion or preference, and you are expected to explain the reasons for your opinion or preference.)  On the Integrated task, the reading passage will disappear when the lecture or conversation begins . (True. You will have 45 or 50 seconds to read (depending on word count), but after that, the text will disappear. However, you can take notes while you read.)
