Application
Organizing Reasons You’ll practice skills for answering the Independent task in the Speaking section and organizing your responses. Consider this question: Some students like to live in a dormitory on campus during their university studies. Other students prefer to live at home with their families . Which would you prefer, and why? Imagine two columns—one labelled “dormitory” and the other “live at home .” Brainstorm reasons for each and compare . Remember that even if the question doesn’t directly ask for details and examples, always include them to strengthen your response . Reflect on the examples provided and think about how you can structure your answers similarly. Examples: I would prefer to live at home. For one thing, I could save money . Dormitories are quite expensive to live in, but at home, I don’t have to pay rent, buy my own food, or pay to do my laundry. Living at home would thus be a significant savings for me. Secondly, it is much quieter at home . I need absolute quiet when I study, but at a dormitory, there are always students talking, laughing, or playing music . I’m sure I would never find the quiet I need to study. . . I would prefer to live in a dormitory. First, I think I could make friends more easily if I were in a dormitory. I’d have a roommate who could introduce me to friends, and of course I’d be able to meet other residents in the common areas. I’d also be closer to my classes . If I lived at home, I’d have to take the bus to and from campus, and this would be a lot of wasted time . Most dormitories, however, are just a short walk from class buildings .
