Speaking 4: Making Comparisons

Objectives:

Introduction There are a number of phrases you can use to introduce reasons. These phrases help guide your listener and signal what you are going to say next . Here are a few examples:

• First, First of all, In the first place; For one thing, . . .is the first reason • Second, Secondly, My second point, Next, A second reason is that . . . • Third, Finally, Lastly, The most important reason is that . . .

Remember, it is acceptable to have only one supporting reason, as long as it is fully explained and supported. However, when you do provide more than one reason, these phrases are a helpful signal to the listener that you are shifting to an additional reason. Keep these phrases in mind as you practice throughout the lesson.

Application

Comparative Language When supporting a preference or opinion with reasons, it is often necessary to use comparative lan- guage in your reasoning. Below is a review of how to form comparative forms of adjectives and adverbs. Activity 4.1 Review the chart below, then add the comparative form of the numbered words as in the examples. The answer key appears at the end of the lesson.
