Introduction Remember that the second task on the Speaking section involves reading a student letter or announcement (around 80-110 words), followed by listening to a conversation between a male and female student discussing the article. You’ll have 30 seconds to prepare a response and 60 seconds to speak. Application Note-taking is crucial for Speaking Task 2 because the reading passage disappears after 45-50 seconds, and the conversation is only heard once. The question you need to answer isn’t shown during the reading or conversation . However, you will always need to refer to the main point of the article, identify the student’s opinion (usually one student will have a clear opinion), and provide the reasons that student gives for their opinion . • During the conversation, focus on quickly identifying which speaker—the man or the woman—expresses a clear opinion, and make note of the reasons they provide for their viewpoint . • Task 2 consists of three parts: the main points of the article, the student’s opinion, and the reasons for that opinion . • Be sure to capture how the student’s opinion relates to the main points of the reading. • Do not try to write down complete sentences—write down only the key words that you will need to use when your answer the question . For this task, it might help to note them down in three columns: the main points in the reading, the overall opinion of student, and the reasons for the opinion .
