Speaking 9: Note-taking for Speaking Tasks 3 and 4

Objectives: TOEFL iBT Speaking Skills: • Learn and practice note-taking techniques for the Integrated tasks 3 (reading and lecture) and 4 (lecture). • Practice answering questions for Integrated tasks 3 and 4. Introduction Consider your answers to the following questions: “Why is note-taking important when listening to uni- versity lectures? What kind of notes are effective?” Think about any answers that come to mind. Application Note-taking for Speaking Task 3 Speaking Task 3 involves an integrated task with a short reading followed by a lecture on the same topic. The reading typically provides general information, like a definition or explanation of a concept, while the lecture offers specific examples that support or elaborate on the reading. Note-taking is crucial for Task 3 because the reading text will only be available for 45 or 50 seconds, and the lecture is heard just once. Keep in mind that the question will ask you to connect the lecture to the reading . A useful way to take notes is by using a double-column format—writing the reading notes on the left and the lecture notes on the right. As suggested, here is one note-taking format you can use for Speaking Task 3:

Activity 9.1 1 . Now, practice with another authentic TOEFL iBT Speaking task 3 . Prepare your notes for Task 3 by setting up a two-column table for the reading and lecture. You will be using your notes to give a practice answer. 2. Read the passage “Integrated Farming”. You will have 45 seconds to read and take notes. After time is up, listen to the “Integrated Farming” lecture . 3 . You will then have 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to respond to the question . Try to speak within the time limits . 4. Now compare your notes to some example notes in the answer key for this activity. Did your notes cover the same points? Could your note-taking have been made more efficient with symbols and abbreviations?
