Speaking 10: Scoring

Objectives: TOEFL iBT Speaking Skills: • Learn the descriptors for different scoring bands on the Speaking section.

• Practice assessing sample student responses. • Practice evaluating other students’ responses.

Introduction In this lesson, you will review the scoring rubrics for the Speaking section of the TOEFL exam and practice applying them to sample material and your own speaking . Think about the factors that lead to higher scores on the Speaking section . What do you think would result in a lower score? Remember, the Speaking section is scored holistically, meaning no single factor will determine your score. To achieve a higher score, you should focus on:

• Directly answering the question • Organizing your response clearly • Supporting your response with examples and details • Using a variety of vocabulary and grammar • Speaking fluently with minimal hesitations, clear pronunciation, and natural intonation

Application

Understanding scoring criteria for Independent Tasks • Review the Independent Rubric at the end of this lesson. Read through the chart carefully and take note of the criteria . • Pay special attention to the Language Use and Topic Development criteria, particularly for band 1, which explains how relying too heavily on “practiced or formulaic expressions” (i .e ., memorized or rehearsed speech) can signal limited control over grammar and vocabulary. Repetition of the prompt (sounding like you’re just repeating the question) without providing a meaningful response can also lower your score. • Keep in mind that small mistakes or stumbles won’t prevent you from getting a high score. If you forget a word or need to rephrase something, that’s okay. The key is to keep speaking. • Always aim to speak continuously until your time runs out to ensure the rater can fully assess your language abilities .
