Objectives • Improve sentence variety by combining independent and dependent clauses. • Learn and practice correct punctuation for combining sentences. • Practice typing or writing a personal response.
Introduction In the activity that follows, you’ll review different ways to combine clauses to create more effective sentences . First, study these key terms . o Independent clause: A group of words with a subject and a verb that can stand alone as a complete sentence . o Dependent clause: A group of words with a subject and a verb that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence . o Phrase: A group of words missing either a subject or a verb. Understanding these terms will help you identify sentence parts and improve your writing. Take a moment to write down or highlight the definitions for reference.
