Although this can sometimes be difficult to determine without more information about what the writer of each sentence wants to emphasize, it may have changed the meaning for a few of the sentences . Using single adverbs as sentence modifiers: Another way to add sentence variety is by using sentence modifiers. A sentence modifier is an adverb that mod- ifies the entire sentence, not just the verb. Notice how single adverbs like fortunately, surprisingly, or clearly can set the tone or context for the entire sentence.
