Writing 8: Responding to the Integrated Task

Objectives • Understand the type of organization called for in an Integrated task response . • Practice another way of taking notes on the Integrated task . • Complete responses for two sample Integrated tasks.

Introduction • In a previous lesson, you practiced making an outline of reading points and adding notes about the lecture to the outline. This lesson suggests another method that you can try. This method is particularly useful for improving the organization of your Integrated task response. It involves outlining the reading passage on the left side of a sheet of paper, leaving space between the main points, and outlining the lecture points on the right side of the sheet of paper. This makes it easier to match the lecturer’s points to the reading passage’s points; often there will be a direct correspondence, but not always. • Keep in mind that when raters evaluate your response on the test, they look for accurate development of ideas, accurate and appropriate use of language, and a well-organized structure.

Exercise 1

Instructions

• Read the two outlines that follow. • Note that Outline 2 is the better choice to use for practicing responding to a TOEFL Writing Integrated task . Outline 1 isn’t “wrong” for an essay in general English writing . However, it doesn’t address the specific requirements of the Integrated task very effectively. Outline 2 gives much more of a sense of the relationship between the reading and the lecture. • The writers who created the two outlines were responding to an Integrated task . Can you guess what the question for this task was? (Hint: look at Outline 2 for clues) . Write down your guess . • Review the question provided in the answer key at the end of this lesson.
