Evaluate the effectiveness of one’s notes. Activity 3.1: Practice Note-Taking Skills What are some helpful ways to organize notes? Directions: • Read the following paragraph about folk legends and folktales.

• Take notes about the main ideas and key details, using symbols and abbreviations where you can. Many people think that folk legends and folktales are synonymous . However, this is not the case . One of the distinguishing features of folk legends is that they are often about real people. This is important because it helps the listeners to identify with the characters in the stories, and it makes the stories engaging. The stories might not be true, and some of the characters or events might be made up, but folk legends give a sense that the story could have been true. That is in distinct contrast from the other main branch of popular storytelling, which is folktales . Like folk legends, folktales are imaginative stories that have been passed down orally, from storyteller to storyteller, for many generations . But unlike folk legends, folktales are very imaginative . Although they can tell us a lot about the culture, folktales are not stories that anyone would think are true . Take, for example, Norwegian folktales… Directions: • Compare your notes with the sample below. • Did you organize your notes into two sections—one about folk legends and the other about folktales?

Activity 3.2: Organizing Notes When taking notes, it’s helpful to represent any organization you notice. For example, if the lecture is comparing two items, you can draw a line down the middle of your paper and take notes on each item in separate columns. Or, if the speaker talks about the past and present, you can divide your paper horizontally, with sections for each time period.
