Objectives: TOEFL iBT Listening Skills: • Understand how word stress in a sentence emphasizes or changes meaning. • Practice recognizing word stress in a sentence. • Identify word stress in examples from the TOEFL iBT Listening section . • Practice listening to a full lecture from the Listening section. Activity 7.1: What is Sentence-level Word Stress? • A stressed word will be higher in pitch, longer in duration, and louder. • When you stress a word in a sentence, it changes the meaning of the sentence.
Directions: • In the chart below, read each sentence and its meaning.
• Scan the QR code to listen to the audio track . (Insert QR code. New audio needed.) • After listening, read the sentence on your own, stressing a different word each time . • After reading each sentence, think about how the meaning of the sentence changes based on the word you stressed.

Kim thought Maya wanted to have a meeting or a discussion instead.
