FRESH WATERMELON ON HOT SUMMER DAYS AND OTHER MEMORIES OF CHILDHOOD SUMMERS

When I think about summer, I think about fresh fruits and vegetables and the days I spent in my grandparents’ enormous garden while I was growing up. They grew all sorts of good food in their garden, like cantaloupe, cucumber, okra, and my personal favorite, watermelon. My family lived really close to their property, and to my cousins’ property, so we all went there a lot during the summer. Even today, I can trace my love of gardening and spending time with my own kids back to those summers. It wasn’t uncommon for my grandparents to force all the grandkids to help them out in the garden, picking weeds, watering plants, and harvesting fruits and veggies. I didn’t particularly enjoy it at the time — it felt like a chore. That said, we did other things at our grandparents’ place. Sometimes on warm summer evenings, we’d go fishing with Grandpa at one of the nearby lakes or streams. We’d add whatever we caught to the rest of the fresh food we had. Those summers really were a lot of fun. Today, gardening is one of my obsessions, and I have my grandparents to thank for that. Having to stay at home during the quarantine helped that obsession grow even more since it’s one of the few ways to safely get outside and do some exercise.

Gardening quickly became my favorite thing to do during the quarantine.

I grow a lot of the same fruits and vegetables my grandparents grew. I have tomatoes, cucumber, squash, purple hull peas, okra, zucchini, and of course, watermelon. At the time I’m writing this, my watermelon seeds are coming in very nicely. Hopefully, not too long after you’ve read this, I’ll get a chance to eat some. There’s nothing quite like a cool, juicy piece of watermelon on a hot summer day.

daughter made me kind of nostalgic for those summers.

The little things, like working in the garden or scaling a fish, bring me back to a time when things were simpler than they are now. It was a time when the worst part of my day could be spending time at my grandparents’ house — and that was great! And we always had access to a lot of great, fresh food. I hope all of you are having a great summer so far, all things considered, and you’ve found ways to make it worthwhile. Stay safe and healthy!

While I don’t do much fishing these days, knowing how to scale and gut a fish came in handy not too long ago. My daughter and I bought some fish from the market, and we didn’t realize it still had scales on it. So, we had to scale the fish. Much like working in my grandparents’ garden, I didn’t like scaling fish at all when I was little. However, doing this task with my

As you recover from your injuries, it’s important you find the right doctor so you get the care you need. Being denied over and over by insurance companies for your treatment is frustrating. However, with these tips, you’ll find a doctor who will help your case, ensuring you get the assistance you deserve. WHO WILL PUT YOUR BEST INTEREST FIRST TIPS FOR FINDING THE RIGHT DOCTOR

FEEL BAD ABOUT THROWING AWAY PHOTOS? 4 RULES FOR GUILT-FREE PHOTO DOWNSIZING If you’ve reached a point in your life where you’ve started to downsize, then you’ve likely grappled with the difficult task of getting rid of photos. After decades of life, how are you supposed to choose which memories are important enough to keep and which aren’t? These four rules can help make this daunting task easier.

RULE NO. 1: CUT SCENIC VIEWS

MAKE SURE THE DOCTOR IS IN YOUR MPN.

You don’t need dozens of photos of that campsite you went to on vacation one summer. If a location was really meaningful, like the beach at your honeymoon, then keep a few, but pictures of the places you’ve been to are far less special than pictures of the people you love.

It’s common for insurance companies to not pay if you go to a doctor outside their medical provider network (MPN); however, there are

exceptions. For example, if your boss’s insurance provider doesn’t have enough physicians in their network to treat your type of injury, they have to pay for the doctor you choose.

RULE NO. 2: TELL A STORY

When you look at a photo, does it make you want to tell a story about the people or places in the image? Could you share plenty of stories about riding around in Dad’s old truck or about how funny your best friend from college was? Keep those photos. Pictures of people whose names you can’t remember or blurry photos you can’t make out can all go.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

Save valuable time and resources by reading reviews on potential doctors published on Google reviews, Facebook, or Yelp before making an appointment. Thousands of injured workers like you utilize these review sites to learn about other patients’ experiences, both good and bad. Narrow your list to the doctors who seem to garner the most favorable reviews and do further research.

RULE NO. 3: EDIT WELL

If you have a lot of photos from a specific event or part of your life, think about how long each “chapter” of your life story would be. How much time would you spend writing about your cousin’s wedding or high school prom? If a certain event didn’t have that much meaning in your life, why dedicate pages and pages of a photo album to it?

AVOID OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE FACILITIES.

Occupational medicine facilities work closely with a company’s insurance provider, which is why carriers send injured workers directly to them. Since these organizations have strong ties, your health isn’t as important to them as maintaining their relationship. For instance, if your workers’ compensation doctor provides strong evidence in support of your claim, that doctor’s job could be in jeopardy because their diagnosis or treatment isn’t in the best financial interest of the insurance company.

RULE NO. 4: THROW PHOTOS AWAY

If a photo isn’t important enough to put in an album or frame on the wall, then it doesn’t need to stick around. Don’t put them in a box you’ll have to sort through later. Let the rejects go. After all that hard work, treat yourself to a photo album shopping spree so you can start organizing the meaningful photos you have left.

GET THE HELP YOU DESERVE ESSENTIAL TIPS TO APPLY FOR VA BENEFITS

If you neglect a few important things while applying for the benefits you deserve, you can face a time-consuming, anxiety- inducing nightmare. The process drags on as you wait to receive those benefits you need and deserve. But if you follow these steps, you’ll avoid the common issues many people face when filing for their Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits.

these secondary conditions along with your primary injuries further supports the symptoms, which allows the VA to clearly see how the two issues correlate. Additionally, this means you’ll be fairly and fully compensated, increasing your overall quality of life.

OBTAINING A NEXUS LETTER

Unfortunately, many veterans rely solely on compensation and pension examinations without seeking a nexus letter to support their case. A nexus letter is a formal letter written and signed by a private health care provider directly connecting your service injuries to your current condition, and the VA weighs nexus letters heavily. This letter can also counter any of the VA examiner’s findings if they contradict your current state.

UNDERSTANDING HOW THE VA EVALUATES BENEFITS

Tailoring your application to what the VA is looking for streamlines the process so you avoid the complications involved with approving a claim. The first thing you need to show is how your disability affects your quality of life. Then you need to provide medical documentation that shows the injury took place during your service. Additionally, you’ll need evidence proving the severity of your condition.

PERSISTING WITH LEGAL REPRESENTATION

The biggest pitfall is to give up after a claim is denied and neglect to seek representation. A seasoned veteran services lawyer can help you discover evidence to support your claims and file all documentation correctly and in a timely manner. If you have any questions or concerns relating to your VA benefits, reach out anytime because we’re happy to serve those who have served our country.

ADDRESSING SECONDARY INJURIES

Secondary injuries, commonly known as secondary service- connected disabilities, result from conditions relating to your service. For instance, orthopedic issues can lead to depression, which would be a secondary condition, or diabetes can result in peripheral neuropathy, which is a secondary consequence. Filing

Planning a Family Entertainment Room

MAKE YOUR GAME NIGHTS EXTRA SPECIAL WITH A FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT ROOM

Families around the world are finding new ways to spend time with each other, and their homes are changing accordingly. Whether your family members are video gamers, movie enthusiasts, or board game fans, everyone can benefit from having a dedicated entertainment room. Here are some tips for putting one together.

spacing out each speaker, you can eliminate cord clutter and tangle.

SOUNDPROOF YOUR SPACE.

Trying to impress your guests with great sound doesn’t mean that your entire neighborhood has to hear what you’re watching! Soundproofing not only helps shield your neighbors from action game explosions and booming movie scores, but it also improves the sound quality in the room. Thick curtains and carpets, wall-mounted foam panels, or freestanding acoustic panels work for basic soundproofing, but if you plan to utilize your space every day and night, then consider hiring a contractor to help estimate materials and cost for a more sophisticated soundproof space.

USE YOUR SPACE WISELY.

Consider the advantages and challenges of your available space. You don’t want small spaces to feel cramped, and you don’t want large spaces to feel empty. If your room is small, then design the space to serve multiple purposes, like installing a bar with a TV on the opposite wall. If your room is large, then why not have two or more TVs to let visitors play multiple games or watch different shows? A projector can also be used to maximize a room’s space. It allows you and your guests to utilize an entire wall without requiring much physical space.

HAVE GREAT LIGHTING.

There’s nothing more inviting than a well-lit space, and this also applies to your entertainment room. Whether you’re playing a board game or putting together puzzles with the whole family, mood lighting can make the experience feel even more cozy and special. Try experimenting with different, stylish lamps or overhead fixtures to light up your space.

SET UP SURROUND SOUND.

Whether you’re using your entertainment room for movies, music, video games, or all of the above, investing in high-quality speakers will pay off instantly. You can set them up around the room for clearer, more immersive sound for movies and games, and by
