A BURGER RECIPE FROM A GRILL OBSESSIVE
WILL YOU TRY MY SALSA BURGERS?
Every winter, my second job is keeping the path from the back door of my house to our outdoor grill clear of snow. After the first snowstorm of the year, I scoop out that trail with a shovel (my first job). Then, every few days (or any time flurries blow through) I go back out in my coat and hat to clear out the drifts. In my family, the path to the grill is sacred. My wife, kids, and I all go crazy for any dish with a bit of smoke, crisp, and char. We make burgers, kabobs, vegetables, chicken, steak, pork chops, aluminum foil-wrapped “hobo dinners,” and even pizza on the grill. Three or four times a week, rain, shine, or snow, you can find me at the burners of my Blackstone griddle getting dinner ready. Thank goodness spring is finally here to make my life easier! I’m rambling about grilling right now because a friend of mine told me May is National Burger Month, and I make my best burgers on the grill. I love grilling up patties on our home rig or out at our lake house. I make regular hamburgers, cheeseburgers, bacon burgers, you name it, but one in particular is requested quite often: The Salsa Cheeseburger. Now, don’t get too excited — this is not a blow-your-mind, chef-quality burger. I’m not Bobby Flay! I’m just a humble grill man who likes a burger and a beer by the lake, and this one always does the job. If you want to test out a new burger for Burger Month, give this baby a try.
DIRECTIONS
• Grab a big bowl and mix the ground beef, cheese, salsa, and rub together. • Use a patty maker (my preference) or your own two hands to shape quarter-pound patties. • Throw those patties on the grill! • If you’re a bacon lover like me, cook up some bacon in the microwave and add it to the burgers. • Sandwich the whole thing between the halves of a white burger bun, add your toppings of choice (I like ketchup, mustard, onions, lettuce, and as many other fixings as I can pile on), and dig in. If you really want to level up your burger and you happen to have an air fryer, make a batch of homemade fries to go with it. Sprinkle them with a steak fry or cheddar fry seasoning from Lawry’s or Cabela’s, and you just might see the gates of grill heaven. As I write this, I’m waiting on the arrival of my brand-new Masterbuilt grill. It’s a gravity grill, so in theory, I’ll be able to put my charcoal briquettes in the hopper and get that smoky flavor without all the mess and constant grill- cleaning. I can’t wait to try it out. If you ever want to swap grill tips or recipes, let me know next time you call or email about an investment property. I’m always down to chat about charcoal. –Darin Garman
DARIN’S SALSA CHEESEBURGER
INGREDIENTS
•
Ground beef
• Shredded cheese (There’s no need to get fancy with this! I just use a bag of shredded cheddar.) • Salsa (aim for 1 cup for every 2–3 pounds of beef.) • Rub (I like rib or steak rub the best, but even fish rub will work. Just add it to suit your taste. If you go for Sriracha rub, be careful. It makes a hot, hot burger!) • Bacon • White burger buns

We’ve all been there: You’re hit with an unusually high energy bill and you aren’t sure why. While we expect our energy bills to increase during certain times of the year, we still expect some consistency. When there are unusual bumps, we want to know why. In some cases, these unusual bumps can be traced to hidden energy drains, or “energy vampires.” Most of these energy vampires are far more insidious than a noticeable bump to your energy bill. Why? Because we’re often paying for electricity we didn’t even realize we were using.
Some electronics offer settings that allow people to truly turn them off, but even that’s not a guarantee. Another option, however, is to use energy-saving power strips or plug-ins. These power strips allow you to control power to select devices — and ensure these devices are only powered when you want them to be. APPLIANCES Appliances like refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers can be used very inefficiently. Refrigerators, for example, work best when they’re full. If you have a fridge with only a few things in it, you’re wasting a lot of energy. When it comes to dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers, make sure you run larger, less frequent loads. Running the appliances for smaller loads is very costly — even with ENERGY STAR-rated appliances. One of the biggest energy drains in the home is the electric water heater. For the most part, that’s to be expected. But what people don’t realize is that sometimes, the water temperature is set too high. In this case, your water heater has to work extra hard to keep the temperature up, resulting in an energy drain. The best way to combat this is to simply lower the temperature on the unit.
What are these energy drains and what can you do about them?
ELECTRONICS TVs, PCs, surround sound equipment, and video game consoles typically drain energy. It comes down to the simple fact that practically every electronic device made today stays “on” even when we turn it off. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that these electronics — while off — still contribute to more than 10% of household energy bills.

protection from the bad guys. I was mainly talking about those trying to get your personal information, or trying to get at your money and other investments tied to technology. That theft is happening daily to folks who have their investments online. All of that is still the case, and it’s even worse today, but you can bet that investing in and owning your own apartment community will ALSO keep you well insulated from dot- com business competition. Your money is safe no matter how many billions venture capitalists want to spend online. You will never be “Amazoned.” Hundreds of business categories are in danger of being impacted negatively by the internet, but apartment communities ARE not and WILL NOT be one of them. The internet can eliminate hundreds of traditional business categories, but it cannot eliminate a person’s need for a home. The demand for apartments will always exist — no
I bet not a month goes by that you don’t hear about or see a business closing its doors as a result of competition from the internet — or, as I call it, dot-com competition. Billions of dollars of venture capital are pouring into the market and those investors have no real goal of making a profit, so many business categories are under constant pressure from dot-coms. A good example of a dot-com is Uber. Uber loses billions and has never made any kind of a profit, but it still sent local cab companies scrambling to compete when it stole their business and revenue. There are, of course, other examples. But one place where all of this dot-com madness has ZERO IMPACT is apartment community investing and ownership. Over the last year or so, I’ve told you that one of the reasons to OWN your own apartment community, either actively or passively, is for
matter how many new dot-com businesses, apps, websites, and IPOs are created.
Here at Heartland, our active and passive investors are fully aware of this, and it has been our “secret” for years now. Many people aren’t aware of it or refuse to acknowledge the power of apartment communities.
And that is fine by us.

BITE INTO AN UNDEAD BURGER
AT IOWA’S ZOMBIE BURGER + DRINK LAB!
On Pg. 1, Darin told you all about the signature burgers he makes on his home grill. But sometimes, you just want someone else to handle the flames! On those nights, Darin turns to Zombie Burger + Drink Lab, the famous Iowa burger joint in Des Moines named the state’s best by The Daily Meal. If you’re a horror movie fan, you have to pin Zombie Burger + Drink Lab for your next trip to the Hawkeye State. The “GOREmet” eatery started out as a burger stand in the 1970s and has expanded to two horror-themed locations. The flagship serves wacky burgers; cocktails; and spiked, hand- mixed shakes in a setting described as “post-apocalyptic chic.” At Zombie Burger, servers dressed like they’ve just walked off the set of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video sling burgers with names like “East Village of the Damned,” “They’re Coming to Get You, Barbara,” “Undead Guy BBQ Burger,” “Sarah’s Revenge,” and “The Negan.” You can choose from three sizes: single, double tap, and triple, and there are even vegan options. Darin’s favorite burger on the menu is “The Walking Ched,” which features a burger patty loaded with bacon, cheddar, caramelized onion, red onion, macaroni and cheese, and mayo, all served up on a breaded and deep-fried macaroni and cheese bun. It’s a heart attack waiting to happen — which just might be the goal of the zombies plotting to eat his brain. Other standouts include the “Undead Elvis” burger with peanut butter, fried bananas, bacon, American cheese, egg, and mayo, and the “Trailer Trash Zombie” burger starring American cheese, fried pickles, chicken-fried bacon, cheese curds, and ranch dressing. The shakes and floats, including the “Zombie Bride Wedding Cake” (vanilla ice cream and yellow cake) and the “Human Centipeach” (vanilla ice cream, peach purée, white cake batter, and graham cracker crumbs) cost $5.25, but you can spike them for $3. Overall, Zombie Burger + Drink Lab is a one-of-a-kind dining experience that no burger lover should miss. Head to ZombieBurgerShakeLab.com to check out the menu for yourself!

Page 4 99-Year-Old Betty White’s Secrets of Longevity
Beloved “Golden Girls” actress Betty White is still enjoying her golden years. The famed actress celebrated her 99th birthday this January. While she told People magazine that she’s “blessed with good health, so turning 99 is no different than turning 98,” she also had a few tips for folks looking to make it to their centennial birthday. KEEP LAUGHING “Don’t take yourself too seriously,” White says. “You can lie to others — not that I would — but you cannot lie to yourself.” White has undoubtedly provided many laughs to viewers over the years, but she’s not just playing it up for the camera. Laughter is part of what keeps her young. BE OPTIMISTIC White says a good sense of humor also helps her keep a good attitude and look for the positive rather than “dwelling on the downside.” Avoiding negativity also gives her energy. “It takes up too much energy being negative,” she told People magazine. STAY BUSY With nearly eight decades of acting under her belt, six Emmys on her shelf, and over 120 screen credits to her name, White is no stranger to hard work. As she told Parade in 2018, “I just love to work, so I’ll keep working until they stop asking.” BETTY WHITE’S SECRETS OF LONGEVITY HOW TO LIVE TO 99
EXERCISE YOUR MIND In addition to her busy work schedule, what keeps Betty White sharp? Crossword puzzles! She told Katie Couric in an interview, “I’m addicted. An admitted addict. I just can’t put ’em down.” FIND A CAUSE White is a lifelong animal lover. She calls her golden retriever, Pontiac, “the star of the house.” While pet ownership itself comes with proven health benefits, White
has channeled her love for animals in bigger causes. She’s been a trustee and board member of the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association for over 40 years and has done work to help protect endangered species in the wild. Funds raised from White’s official fan club, Bet’s Pets, all go to support animal charities. EMBRACE YOUR VICES White told Parade she loves vodka and hot dogs “probably in that order,” which just goes to show that you don’t have to forgo your treats to live to 99.
