Welcome to Only Connect This is our 28th Event. We are proud to have hosted many Only Connect events over the last years here in Bristol. We have a very special request to make. Please can all our guests kindly stop connecting during the short speech & raffle and indulge our speakers. This would be appreciated and would allow us to communicate useful information for all our guests’ benefit. Please can you also kindly return your namebadges to our staff as you leave the venue. Arrival and Registration Guests are reminded that only a ticket bearing their own name will grant entry.

“As Lord Mayor, I am delighted to act as Patron of the 2016/17 Lord Mayor of Bristol’s Children Appeal. For a city that embraces diversity and equality and is abundant in so many areas, it troubles me that we still find so many children
in dire need who fall under the radar and face a Christmas without adequate food or clothing. Join me please so that together we can make an immediate difference to these children. This year we aim to raise £66,000 which will help approximately 1,650 underprivileged children. Please support us tonight at Only Connect by purchasing Grand Raffle Tickets from one of the volunteers. Winners will be announced at 10.15pm and drawn by Bruce Simmonds, Chairman of The Lord Mayor’s Children Appeal. Two of the highlights will be The Lord Mayor of Bristol’s Gift Gala 2017 on 2 March 2017, this time at a new venue: Ashton Gate Stadium and the Christmas Carol Concert on 12 December 2016.

2. Attire Notes We request all guests to have conventional black-tie attire. Regrettably, admission may be refused to guests not following the smart evening dress code to ensure other guests feel comfortable and no refunds can be issued.

4. Security Wristbands & Casino Chip As you arrive and your ticket is checked, you will be provided with a security wristband. This must be secured. This is checked each time you re-enter the venue. Your chip is exchanged for a glass of prosecco. 5. Your Namebadge from KN When your ticket was booked online, the purchaser was asked to provide your name, title, company and email. The first three will be displayed on your namebadge in exactly the format it was entered. The badges supplied by KN Office will be displayed in alphabetical order based on first names across several tables inside. Please also be sure to place your business card to the board at the entrance so other guests can know who is in attendance. 3. Guest list When you arrive at the red carpet, you will be greeted and asked for your printed ticket and first name. Please bring tickets.

Key Networking Tips from Author Roy Sheppard Here are some networking tips to help you gain the most from attending Only Connect, extracted from the ebook “Meet Greet and Prosper” by Roy Sheppard (attending)
• Think of all new people at Only Connect as ‘friends you have yet to meet’. This is a great way of taking the pressure off, so you relax. That will help you meet more people. • Decide that you are going to meet new people – not spend all evening ‘clumping’ only with people you already know. • Bite the bullet – go up to strangers (even though our mothers tell us not to!) As author Susan Jeffers says “Feel the Fear and Do it Any Way”. • Stand up. Sitting down at a networking event doesn’t work. • Think about the needs of your best contacts – how could you help them achieve their needs through any new people you meet? • Always give your name first. It helps put others at ease. Then ask for theirs. • Listen more carefully to others’ names. Repeat the name until it is lodged in your brain. If you didn’t quite catch it, ask for it to be repeated, rather than ‘letting it go’. Imagine a close friend will join you and stand there waiting to be introduced. This will force you to pay more attention! • Starting a conversation can be daunting for some. Talk about common interests – why they’ve come, what ‘interests’ them the most (a better question than ‘what do you do?’) how long they’ve worked for their company, what they like about their role, what are their companies’ biggest success stories?

• Leave the shy and nervous you at home that night. ☺ • Make a point of smiling at everyone. Yes. It might freak some people out, but it’ll be fun for you! • In order to help others, you need to know what they want. To find out, ask lots of non- threatening questions about them, share stuff about you too so it’s not an inquisition! • Don’t spray your business cards around like a tomcat! When you meet someone interesting – COLLECT their business card. • Better still, ask if they are part of LinkedIn. If they are, open the LI app on your phone, let them find themselves for you and connect. You instantly have each others contact details. • Spouses have FAR more power and influence than some imagine. Nurture them. Get to know them as people. Look after their interests and they will recognise and reward you by providing access to their decision-making ‘superiors’. • When you meet new people, find out enough about them to have a valid reason to follow up with a call, SMS message, or email. Perhaps you can send them some appropriate information that you promised. • Enjoy yourself.
