The riots of 1968 following the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., which devas- tated the nearby 14th Street corridor, frightened many more residents into leaving. The resulting low housing prices attracted a diverse mix of young people, artists, musicians, and families fleeing political and economic turmoil in Central America, Southeast Asia and elsewhere.
