Achievements Shortlisted as a semi-finalist for the prestigious Schmidt Science Fellows Programme (2026/27), which recognises early-career researchers committed to interdisciplinary science and global impact Awarded the Fulbright Fellowship (2023/24), a highly competitive international scholarship recognising academic excellence and leadership potential. The fellowship was hosted by the Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida, with contributions made to research on plant biology. Authored several peer-reviewed publications and technical reports supporting the biological control of invasive plants in South Africa – reinforcing the value of applied research in solving real-world problems. Received best student speaker awards at national conferences hosted by the South African Biodiversity Institute and awarded an international travel grant by the Centre for Invasion Biology for best student presentation Awarded the Postgraduate Merit Award for the duration of Master’s and PhD studies. This award recognises academic excellence at Honours level and is granted to students achieving a minimum average of 70% and completing Master’s studies within two years. In recognition of dedication to science education and mentorship, received the Faculty of Science Teaching Assistant Awards from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2017 and 2019. Completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Science Education with distinction in 2022. These experiences underscore the belief that education is a powerful tool for change, and that mentoring the next generation of scientists is as critical as research itself. Appointed Lecturer in Conservation Science at the Southern African Wildlife College, reflecting a continued commitment to combining education, research and community engagement to address environmental challenges in southern Africa Mentors I deeply admire Emeritus Professor Marcus Byrne. Professor Byrne is not only a world-renowned scientist but also an exceptional teacher, known for his commitment to science communication and public engagement. His words, “We are tasked with building and developing a nation, so each of us must not take our roles lightly,” continue to guide my work as a scientist and educator. I am also grateful to Associate Professor Kelsey Glennon and Dr Samalesu Mayonde, whose mentorship has been central to my postgraduate research journey. Their guidance has helped me navigate academic challenges and cultivate a strong scientific identity. I hold great respect for Dr Ida Risenga, Dr Kim Madikiza and Dr Sivu Situngu – inspirational black women in science whose leadership and resilience have paved the way for others. Their achievements highlight the importance of representation and mentorship in academia. Finally, Professor Lucas Majure of the Florida Museum of Natural History has played an important role in broadening my research perspective and strengthening my commitment to global scientific collaboration.

Malebese Ishmael Sello, 30, is a pioneering mathemat- ics educator in Mankweng, Limpopo, redefining how learners experience numbers, logic and self-belief. At Poguti- Maribulla Primary School, he transforms classrooms with a learner-centred approach that makes mathematics relevant, joyful and empowering. He holds a BEd, three BEd Honours degrees and an Honorary Doctorate in ICT in education. Currently pursuing two master’s degrees in ICT and science education, Malebese exemplifies lifelong learning in a rapidly evolving world. Crowned Limpopo’s Top ICT Teacher in 2022, he was also honoured as Global Teacher of the Year and represented South Africa in China for a national mathematics programme. His part- nerships with Edunova, Bellamatrix ICT Foundation and Nka’Thuto EduPropeller strengthen digital literacy across communities. Through Kings of Tomorrow, a mentorship movement he leads, Malebese nurtures young boys to grow into confident, focused leaders. He also facilitates ICT training for teachers and learners, advocating for equitable, tech-enabled education. Driven by the belief that “education is nation-building”, he wakes each day with purpose – determined to shape a generation that is not only mathematically literate but boldly equipped to lead.
