Avenue. Seventh Street started where it does today, at the wharves of Washington’s Southwest waterfront, and continued through the main market square to the original city line. The turn- pike carried Civil War soldiers to battle and President Lincoln to his summer home. It ran deep into Maryland, serving farmers who sup- plied the city.
