An Appreciation for Native Prairie Ecosystems and Their Importance to Saskatchewan

As a partner organization in the Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan (PCAP), SaskEnergy was a proud sponsor of PCAP’s Native Prairie Appreciation Week (NPAW) in 2022-23. The week, which occurs in June and has been jointly declared by the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture since 1999, provides the opportunity for Saskatchewan residents to recognize and celebrate native prairie and the value this distinctive ecosystem provides. Grasslands are one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world, making them a conservation priority. Native prairie plays an important role in Saskatchewan’s biodiversity, in carbon sequestration, and in supporting the province’s livestock industry. It also has cultural, spiritual and recreational significance. NPAW is the only week in North America dedicated to raising awareness of native grasslands.
