I HAVE MUCH TO CELEBRATE THIS LABOR DAY THE HEART OF MY OFFICE: MY FANTASTIC TEAM! For many people around the country, Labor Day serves as a catalyst for the ultimate end-of-summer celebration. Between delicious food covering your grill and family and friends filing into your backyard on a sunny Monday spent outside the office, you might forget why you have the day off in the first place. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. While most people know me strictly as a physical therapist, I’m also a business owner, and, with the amazing group of staff members I have working in my office right now, I have a lot to celebrate this Labor Day. Anyone in charge of hiring new employees will tell you that it can be a difficult task. You have to weed through masses of applications to find individuals whose personalities will mesh well with your existing team members and who have an innate desire to further your clinic’s mission. I promise it sounds far easier than it actually is. Having been a physical therapist for over 30 years now, I’ve
worked with many teams, and I can honestly say that the close-knit group of six people working in ROC PT currently might be the most efficiently functioning team I’ve ever had. One of the primary reasons this group works so well together is that everyone seems to understand the true meaning of teamwork. They all know exactly what their roles are in the office, but they never hesitate to help a teammate out with their responsibilities because they know that by doing so, they are ultimately making patients’ experiences better. While teamwork is important, every single one of our staff members also has a positive attitude, a great sense of humor, and the capacity to learn quickly. They don’t let themselves get overly frustrated after long days, and they joke with our patients, all while learning as much as they can as quickly as possible. I know it sounds a little sentimental, but I believe that when a physical therapy office has a positive and cohesive team working together, it makes the office itself a healing environment. It’s almost unbelievable how much of an effect
a great team has on patient care, and I feel so lucky to witness it every day. Everyone present in the office — the physical therapist, the aide, the office managers, and the patients — are all focused on a single mission: healing. Every year at our company Christmas party, I sit down with my staff members, and we talk about the number of patients we were able to help in the previous 52 weeks. Most years, that number stays right around 350! How cool is that? Because of our team’s and our patients’ dedication to healing, 350 people are able to return to the life they knew and loved before their injury. It’s really an amazing thing. When you wake up, drive to work, and punch the time clock five days a week, it’s easy to overlook how strong of an influence great team members can have on all aspects of life. My wife can even attest to the fact that when I come home from work, no matter how busy the day was, I still regard it as a good one, and I have my team to thank for that.
