Knoxville dock mentor STEVE MARINE takes pride in setting a good example for his teammates. In fact, he's been so good at that over the years that he inspired his son, ANTHONY, to join our team as well. Like father, like son Steve has been with Averitt for 30 years, with much of that time spent at our Birmingham service center before transferring to the Volunteer State. He’s also lent his expertise across our network, truly earning his name as a “mentor.” “A lot of people at the corporate office and at other facilities know who Steve Marine is because of his willingness to step up and help out other service centers when we need it,” says AMOS ROGAN of our LTL operations leadership. “He’s someone we can always depend on. If we need help and need things done the right way, we can call on him.” Anthony certainly learned a thing or two, and he has followed in Steve’s footsteps as a dock mentor in Birmingham. “As a kid, dad worked here in Birmingham for so many years. I kind of grew up with Averitt,” recalls Anthony, who has been with our team since 2013. “I would come up to the service center every now and then, and I met a bunch of people and saw how Averitt operated. Dad worked hard, and Averitt was good to him. I knew when I got older, I could have a good career right here at Averitt.” And when that opportunity came, Steve passed along some fatherly advice. “He came home and asked me what I thought about working at Averitt,” Steve says. “I told him, ‘Averitt is a career. It’s not a place you leave after a THE TWO, THE PROUD, THE MARINES
year or two. It’s a place where you can make a career out of it.” Once Anthony was hired, Steve shared with him the importance of communication and skill on the dock. “Communication is a big key,” he says. “There are dock associates here who have been with Averitt for 35 years. It’s like building a puzzle. When Anthony came on, he said, ‘Dad, I can drive that forklift.’ I said, ‘Son, there’s a difference between driving one and operating one. If you can operate it, then you’re doing good.” Anthony is thankful for everything he’s learned from his dad. “He pretty much taught me everything I know now,” he says. “I wouldn’t be the man I am today without him. I’m trying to help teach all the new people we have in Birmingham. I want to have everybody here on the same page. Communication and working together are very important.” Anthony says it’s all about making a lasting legacy. “I want to raise my family and be just like he’s been and have a career at Averitt,” he explains. “Maybe one day I can sit back and tell my kids, ‘Grandpa and I both worked more than 30 years at Averitt.’” DO YOU WANT TO BE A MENTOR? TEAMING UP TO HELP OTHERS The Christmas and holiday season is here, and many facilities throughout our network are taking advantage of that opportunity to help others through our ongoing Team Up Community Challenge. We want to know what kind of impact you’re making! Whether it’s meals for the hungry, clothing or toy drives, or other ways you’re helping those in need, we encourage you to let us know. Please send your Team Up Community Challenge project updates and photos to TeamUp@Averitt.com. At the end of the year, your events will result in a matching contribution to Averitt Cares for Kids! And then we’ll get started up again in 2024 as we look to make an even bigger difference in our communities!
