This week we celebrated National Social Science Month. On Monday our Year 12 Sociologists attended the Sociology in Action Conference in the heart of Westminster. On Tuesday we were delighted to partner with Royal Holloway and St Mary’s universities to mark National Social Science Month. We were joined by three inspirational lecturers who delivered taste

lectures on a range of topics to give students in Years 10 to 13 and their families a greater insight into current research. On Wednesday Sixth Form students took part in their second MBA workshop with 8 Billion Ideas learning about marketing. The Food & Nutrition team has been extremely busy this week. On Monday and Tuesday the Year 9 Bake Off competition took place and there was no shortage of willing judges to choose the winner. It was no easy task, although a very enjoyable one! On Wednesday we welcomed the Rotary Club, Mayor and local Chef, Tom Rowlandson, to judge the Rotary Young Chef competition. The standard this year was fantastic with the judges commending not only the restaurant quality presentation but also the sophisticated flavours. Well done to all who took part. Our GCSE and A Level Drama students enjoyed a trip to Richmond Theatre on Wednesday to see The Woman in Black. Whilst on Thursday we hosted the Globe Theatre in school to support our English GCSE students develop their knowledge and understanding of set texts through live performance. HEALTH AND WELLBEING
This week is Anti-Bullying Week and understanding the line between ‘banter’ and bullying is the key focus. Banter and jokes can play an important role in the development and maintenance of friendships. However, sometimes these behaviours can be taken too far such that the behaviours constitute bullying. For example, when there is targeted repetition of the ‘banter’ or if the ‘banter’ is about personal characteristics such as appearance. The significance of behaviours that we would think of as bullying can also be downplayed when people try to pass these behaviours off as ‘just banter’. If something being called ‘banter’ is hurting someone, it’s no longer ‘banter’ but potentially bullying behaviour. A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 11
Year 11 returned to their normal timetable this week after successfully completing their mock exams. Next week they will start to receive feedback from their subject teachers as to how they performed in these exams. Congratulations to 11SAS who are currently top of the leaderboard in Year 11 for epraise points. The top three standings are as follows: 1st 11SAS with a total of 366 points, 2nd 11PON with 277, and 3rd 11ERU with 251 points. Last Thursday our Year 10/11 Netball team had a match against Turing House. This was a brilliant game, they showed excellent teamwork and determination which all paid off as they went on to win 37-3! On Wednesday afternoon, 8 of our students, along with 4 Twickenham School students, participated in the Rotary Young Chef Competition. All students did an excellent job, creating some beautiful dishes. We welcomed the Mayor, Councillor Suzette Nicolson to present the awards to the winners! The winner and runners up were Connie, Aditi and Emilia in Year 10 but I know that our Year 11 competitors also wowed the judges and should be equally proud! Wednesday evening our Drama students went to see Woman in Black at Richmond Theatre. They were gripped by this spooky tale and amazed how the actors created so many characters and locations with their cast of 2 and minimal props and set! Students are looking forward to analysing the production in more detail in preparation for their Live Theatre review. Good Luck to our U16 Basketball team who are taking part in the RSSP tournament next Wednesday after school. We look forward to hearing about how they performed in next week’s bulletin. Next week we have an INSET day on Monday. Students are not expected to attend school, however those who are involved in the Annie production will need to come in for their dress rehearsal. Good luck to the Year 11 students who are performing in the school’s production of Annie next week. We cannot wait to see the show, we know a countless amount of hard work and rehearsal hours have been put into this. Break a leg!

Tender is the night - F.Scott Fitzgerald
“I want to give a really BAD party. I mean it. You wait and see.” Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a classic novel set in the 1920s in the French Riviera. Like his more famous novel, The Great Gatsby, it follows the lives of the elite as they strive for influence and power in a changing world. If you want a challenging but rewarding read, I highly recommend this book and Fitzgerald’s other works.

Student Parliament meet Munira Wilson MP! Last week was UK Parliament Week which we celebrated in school. As part of this, our Student Parliament was visited by Munira Wilson MP. Munira spoke to the students about her work as an MP as well as what motivated her to go into politics. The students followed up with a range of questions for Munira about local and national issues including diversity, young people’s engagement in politics and conflict. The questions were really well thought out, and it was clear that students were genuinely interested in the topics they asked about. In her answers, Munira was able to engage our students in debate, especially around whether 16 year olds should have the vote, which split opinion. A big thank you to Munira and to the Student Parliament!
Jack Petchey Award Ceremony The Jack Petchey Awards Ceremony for last year’s winners of the event took place Monday Evening. Well done again to all those who received an award. It was a delight to see that Eleanor (Y8), Milly (Y11) and Zaina (Y12) were all in attendance alongside Ms O’Brien who received her Leader Award Grant which she has used for a new Samba Band!
