lectures on a range of topics to give students in Years 10 to 13 and their families a greater insight into current research. On Wednesday Sixth Form students took part in their second MBA workshop with 8 Billion Ideas learning about marketing. The Food & Nutrition team has been extremely busy this week. On Monday and Tuesday the Year 9 Bake Off competition took place and there was no shortage of willing judges to choose the winner. It was no easy task, although a very enjoyable one! On Wednesday we welcomed the Rotary Club, Mayor and local Chef, Tom Rowlandson, to judge the Rotary Young Chef competition. The standard this year was fantastic with the judges commending not only the restaurant quality presentation but also the sophisticated flavours. Well done to all who took part. Our GCSE and A Level Drama students enjoyed a trip to Richmond Theatre on Wednesday to see The Woman in Black. Whilst on Thursday we hosted the Globe Theatre in school to support our English GCSE students develop their knowledge and understanding of set texts through live performance. Today we are supporting Children in Need through our non-uniform day. If you would still like to contribute please click here.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

This week is Anti-Bullying Week and understanding the line between ‘banter’ and bullying is the key focus. Banter and jokes can play an important role in the development and maintenance of friendships. However, sometimes these behaviours can be taken too far such that the behaviours constitute bullying. For example, when there is targeted repetition of the ‘banter’ or if the ‘banter’ is about personal characteristics such as appearance. The significance of behaviours that we would think of as bullying can also be downplayed when people try to pass these behaviours off as ‘just banter’. If something being called ‘banter’ is hurting someone, it’s no longer ‘banter’ but potentially bullying behaviour. View this Young Anti-bullying Alliance playlist to watch some short videos on the topic of banter and bullying.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

This week Year 10 attended a very moving assembly where Deputy Headteacher Ms Lane discussed remembrance day and how it relates to our school values and the people we can all aspire to be. Form groups have been spending their tutor time this week focusing on getting students DofE Bronze awards signed off. Please can you support us in encouraging your child to complete their section write ups and get them online processing ASAP. On Tuesday, Waldegrave hosted its first-ever Festival of Social Science in collaboration with Royal Holloway University! Our students and their adult counterparts teamed up for lively discussions on cutting-edge research in politics, economics, and psychology, state of the art tools to diagnose autism, the links between foreign aid and migration. Additionally, we explored the use of football fantasy to understand inequalities in the labour markets. The event ignited heated debates, and, fingers crossed, it ignited a passion in future students to make a substantial impact on the UK! On Wednesday afternoon, 8 of our students along with 4 Twickenham School students participated in the Rotary Young Chef Competition. All students did an excellent job, creating some beautiful dishes. We welcomed the Mayor, Councillor Suzette Nicolson to present the awards to the winners! First place went to Connie in 10SDR, Aditi (10FJA) came second and Emilia (10PRE) in third place. Connie and Aditi will now progress to the next round, well done! Today we had a non-uniform day to raise money for Children in Need. The theme was ‘spotty’ and it was nice to see our students embracing this and helping a good cause. We look forward to finding out how much the school has raised for this brilliant cause in next week’s bulletin. There is still time to donate if you wish to support us - click here to donate. Well done to Isla in 10SHO who has been awarded a Jack Petchey Award for commitment to Scouting! Isla is an Explorers Scout and takes part in many scouting events. She has just obtained the Platinum Scout Award and is a Scout Young Leader, volunteering with the Beavers group each week. Next week we have an INSET day on Monday. Students are not expected to attend school, however those who are involved in the Annie production will need to come in for their dress rehearsal. Students should use this day

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Once, Now, Then, After... - Morris Gleitzman “Everybody deserves to have something good in their life at least once.” The seven book series by Morris Gleitzman is a gripping read surrounding the story of a young Jewish boy during World War Two. He is determined to run away from his orphanage and save his parents from the Nazis. I loved this series because it is very emotional and intriguing. You grow to connect to the characters on a personal level and develop a deeper understanding of what people went through during the war. ~ Recommended by Yasemin A, Year 11 student

Student Parliament meet Munira Wilson MP! Last week was UK Parliament Week which we celebrated in school. As part of this, our Student Parliament was visited by Munira Wilson MP. Munira spoke to the students about her work as an MP as well as what motivated her to go into politics. The students followed up with a range of questions for Munira about local and national issues including diversity, young people’s engagement in politics and conflict. The questions were really well thought out, and it was clear that students were genuinely interested in the topics they asked about. In her answers, Munira was able to engage our students in debate, especially around whether 16 year olds should have the vote, which split opinion. A big thank you to Munira and to the Student Parliament!

Jack Petchey Award Ceremony The Jack Petchey Awards Ceremony for last year’s winners of the event took place Monday Evening. Well done again to all those who received an award. It was a delight to see that Eleanor (Y8), Milly (Y11) and Zaina (Y12) were all in attendance alongside Ms O’Brien who received her Leader Award Grant which she has used for a new Samba Band!
