Then he explained the secret o f the paper. He said, “ I made marks on the paper I gave to Boana. The marks were words. The words told the store man what I wanted. But I pay him fo r all the things I ordered.” The men couldn’t understand. It still seemed like magic to them because none o f them could read or write. They had no paper and no books. The missionary saw how puz zled the men were and he had an idea. “ I tell you what I’ll do,” he said, “ i f you will send your children to my home, I ’ll teach them to make marks on paper. They can learn to make paper speak and to know what it says.” So a school was started in that part o f the island o f New Guinea. Boana and other happy boys be gan to learn the secrets o f paper that speaks. It was not easy but they thought it was fun. Secret ly they still hoped it would make them rich. Soon they discovered that pa per was not magic. It did not bring them clothes, food, and oth er things. But it brought them something much, much better, fo r they learned to hear a very spe cial Book speak. The Book spoke to their hearts. It told them how to be rich in their hearts. It told them o f the great God who made their island and the blue ocean around it. It told them that God loved men, women, boys and girls. It told them that God gave His Son to be punished fo r the wrong things they did. It told them that He would fo r give the wrong things they had done i f they would trust in Him. And it told them o f a lovely place He is getting ready fo r those who trust in Him. Boana and some o f the children and parents believed what the Book said and were made rich and glad in their hearts. From the new publication, “ PLEASE TELL ME A STORY ,” by Velma B.
