IF IT’S NOT THE SEASIDE, THEN LET IT BE A SPA
Serbia has beautiful spas and you won't be mistaken which- ever one you choose to visit - Soko, Vrnjačka, Koviljača, Niš- ka etc. The choice is almost unlimited, and they all have heal- ing waters and pools for relaxation. In this issue of Elevate, we take you to the town of Kuršumlija, simply because its terri- tory is home to three spas: Prolom, Lukovska and Kuršumlijs- ka. And, yes, it is also home to the incredible and unique Dev- il’s Town... With regard to the famous Prolom spa, not much introduc- tion is needed when it comes to its famous healing water, which represent a unique gift of nature that springs from the eastern slopes of Mount Radan, in a distinctive eco- logical oasis. Although this water, which is suitable for the treatment of various diseases, has made this spa very pop- ular, during the summer months you can also enjoy its modern wellness centre and an aqua park with two open pools filled with healing water. The intensive development of Lukovska Spa begam early in the 21 st century, thanks to a large number of hot thermal min- eral springs (as many as 37). Located on the eastern slopes of Kopaonik, at the highest possible altitude, it possesses all four healing natural factors (healing water, mud, gas and cli- mate) and has been attracting a large number of visitors for years. This is an area of stunningly beautiful nature, fresh and clean air, local food, thermal waters, rich history and breath-
taking views. Take a break and enjoy the rich spa centres, hike to beautiful vantage points, ride a mountain bike on the forest trails... Lukovska Spa is the right choice for all of that! Another gem of Serbian tourism, Kuršumlijska Spa was de- clared a source of “generally useful and healing mineral wa- ter” back in 1929 by decree of King Alexander II Karađorđević. It was also declared a climatic rehabilitation centre in 1956, thanks to the air quality of the area. It is characterised by an abundance of mineral waters suitable for the treatment of a wide range of afflictions. The healing power of its thermal mineral springs was affirmed as far back as Roman times, as evidenced by numerous remnants. Guests can take advan- tage of modern medical treatments, wellness facilities, swim- ming pools suitable for all, comfortable accommodation and surroundings that offer numerous opportunities for recrea- tional activities. Located in the vicinity of these spas is the natural monument known as Devil’s Town, which is such a unique site that visiting it is simply a must. Classified under state protection, it com- prises two natural phenomena that are very rare: earthen fig- ures represented by specific forms of relief that stand out in the area and are very attractive; and two springs of highly acidic water with high mineralisation. Devil’s Town was includ- ed on the 2007 shortlist for the seven new wonders of the world, as the only representative from Serbia.
