Glifada GLYFADA
Glamorous gateway to the Athens Riviera T he sheltered Saronic Gulf extends from the southern suburbs of Athens to Cape Sounio, Attica’s southern- most point. Just a 30- to 40-minute drive will lead you to a place where urban sprawl gives way to an idyl- lic palm-fringed setting. As home turf to millionaires and popstars, the most com- mercial of beachside suburbs, Glyfada lies 16km from the Acropolis, where it proudly flaunts its “L.A. airs”. There are luxurious leafy pockets where you might as well be on Rodeo Drive: jazzy Kyprou and Laodikis streets, with their upscale boutiques, palm trees and style-conscious open-air cafes. Beneath it all, though, sociable Glyfada remains re- freshingly grounded, with souvlaki joints, cinemas and markets sharing street space with trendy bars. Metaxa Street, repre- senting the main artery, runs from Agiou Konstantinou Cathedral. This street rep- resents a long, open-air shopping mall of international and Greek fashion chains and fast-food outlets. There is also a string of perfectly-service- able public beaches, some offering free parasols, that line the Glyfada seafront. Punctuated by several marinas and cafés, the area is easily accessible from down- town Athens. Many locals enjoy cooling off here, while the more affluent Atheni- ans head for the considerably more fash- ionable and photogenic Asteras Beach Resort, located around a kilometre fur- ther south.
