T his film left an indelible mark on the history of cin- ema. A silent comedy from 1925 that was directed, written and produced by Charlie Chaplin, who also starred as the lead actor, it is considered “the first com- edy of epic proportions”, as the Los Ange- les Times wrote, or, according to the rat- ing of Variety, “Chaplin’s triumph”. Some sources also claim that Chaplin himself stated that this was the film for which he wanted to be remembered. And so it was! Chaplin drew inspiration for the film from the Klondike Gold Rush and the story of the Donner Party, who were forced to eat the leather of their shoes af- ter finding themselves snowed under in the mountains. Chaplin, who believed that there’s a fine line between tears and laughter, decided to combine these sto- ries of hardship and horror to create a comedy. His famous Tramp character becomes a gold prospector, determined to confront all the perils of hunting for gold, includ- ing illness, hunger, solitude... For the film’s introduction, which was shot in the snow-covered Sierra Nevada region, Chaplin recreated the historic im- age of prospectors struggling to climb the Chilkoot Trail. Six hundred extras, many of them recruited from the ranks of Sac- ramento’s homeless population, were brought by train to climb the 8,000-foot (2,300-metre) trail carved through the snowy mountains. The film also includes scenes of Chaplin cooking his shoes, or his famished friend Big Jim seeing him as a chicken. The Gold Rush was nomi- nated for Academy Awards for Best Mu- sic and Best Sound following its 1942 re-release, only for it to today be among Chaplin’s most famous works. F ilm koji je ostavio neizbri- siv trag u istoriji bioskopa – nemi humoristički film iz 1925. godine, reditelja, sce- nariste, producenta i glav- nog glumca Čarlija Čaplina, smatra se „prvom komedijom epskih razmera“, kako je pisao „Los Anđeles Tajms“, ili po ocenama Varajatija, „Čaplinovim trijumfom“. Po nekim izvorima, i sam Čaplin je izjavio da je to film po kome bi želeo da bude upamćen. I jeste! Čaplin je dobio inspiraciju za film iz Klondajške zlatne groznice, kao i iz priče o Doner grupi - kada su se naš- li snegom zatrpani u planinama, bi- li su prinuđeni da jedu kožu sa svojih cipela. Čaplin, koji je verovao da suze i smeh nisu nikada previše udaljeni, odlučio je da spoji ove priče nevolja i užasa u komediju. Slavni lik Skitnice
postao je tragač za zlatom odlučan u suočavanju sa svim nedaćama, poput bolesti, gladi, usamljenosti... Za uvod u film, sniman u snež- nom kraju Sijera Nevade, Čaplin je ponovo stvorio istorijsku sliku kopa- ča koji se bore da se popnu na Čilkot. Šest stotina statista, od kojih su mno- gi regrutovani među beskućnicima Sakramenta, dovedeni su vozom da se penju na prolaz visine 2.300 meta- ra, iskopan kroz snežne planine. U fil- mu su se mogle videti i scene Čaplina kako kuva cipele, ili kako ga izglad- neli prijatelj Veliki Džim vidi kao ko- košku. Nakon reizdanja 1942. godine, „Zlatna groznica“ je bila nominova- na za Oskara u kategoriji za Najbolju muziku i Najbolji zvuk, da bi film da- nas dobio status jednog od najpozna- tijih Čaplinovih dela.
