A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 13

I would like to start by saying well done to all Year 13 students who have now completed their first set of mock exams. I was extremely impressed with their conduct during their mocks and their punctuality over the course of the week. Their teachers will start giving them feedback in the coming weeks. Last week was UK Parliament Week which we celebrated in school. As part of this, our Student Parliament was visited by Munira Wilson MP. Munira spoke to the students about her work as an MP as well as what motivated her to go into politics. The students followed up with a range of questions for Munira about local and national issues including diversity, young people’s engagement in politics and conflict. The questions were really well thought out, and it was clear that students were genuinely interested in the topics they asked about. In her answers, Munira was able to engage our students in debate, especially around whether 16 year olds should have the vote, which split opinion. A big thank you to Munira and to the Student Parliament! On Tuesday, Waldegrave hosted its first-ever Festival of Social Science in collaboration with Royal Holloway University! Our students and their adult counterparts teamed up for lively discussions on cutting-edge research in politics, economics, and psychology, state of the art tools to diagnose autism, the links between foreign aid and migration. Additionally, we explored the use of football fantasy to understand inequalities in the labour markets. The event ignited heated debates, and, fingers crossed, it ignited a passion in future students to make a substantial impact on the UK! On Monday, there will not be any lessons taking place as it is an INSET day for all teaching and non-teaching staff. Year 13 students need to continue to work on their independent revision. Lessons for all students will resume on Tuesday, I would also like to thank the Year 13 Drama students who have been involved in the preparation of our school production of Annie. They have worked tirelessly in preparation for next week’s performances. On a final note, students need to ensure they complete their UCAS applications in the coming weeks. The students who have submitted them have already started receiving offers from Universities, which is really exciting.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Tender is the night - F.Scott Fitzgerald

“I want to give a really BAD party. I mean it. I want to give a party where there’s a brawl and seductions and people going home with their feelings hurt and women passed out in the cabinet de toilette. You wait and see.” Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a classic novel set in the 1920s in the French Riviera. Like his more famous novel, The Great Gatsby, it follows the lives of the elite as they strive for influence and power in a changing world. If you want a challenging but rewarding read, I highly recommend this book and Fitzgerald’s other works.
