SUMMER DAYS

Remembering the Best of Summer Vacation

As far as winters go, this past one wasn’t terrible in terms of snow and ice, but boy was it cold! My fingers have only just started to warm up after that polar vortex in February. Things got so cold during that cold snap that 17 degrees felt warm to me! Cabin fever set in strong this year, and I’m more than ready to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. When I was a kid, we spent almost all of our time outdoors during the summer. I was fortunate to have some close friends who lived nearby, as well as a few cousins who were the same ages and my brothers and I. We didn’t have video games or screens to distract us. Right when the days started to warm up during the spring, even when we still had school, we would be running around outside until it was time to do homework. In the summertime, we were outside as soon as we finished breakfast. We’d come home for lunch and be back out until it was time for dinner. When the days were long, we’d go outside after dinner, too, until the sun set and the streetlamps came on. We spent hours playing sports or getting into who knows what “In the summertime, we were outside as soon as we finished breakfast.”

kind of trouble. Back then, we didn’t use any sort of sunscreen. We’d burn pretty bad in the first couple of days, but then your skin would peel, you’d get a tan, and you were fine for the rest of the summer. That said, my brothers have had cancerous skin lesions in their older years, so I don’t recommend anyone follow our skin care strategy this summer. A lot of what we did outside revolved around playing sports like baseball or basketball, but there were days when the weather was too bad to be outside. When that happened, we’d high- tail it over to someone else’s house and get a game of Monopoly going. Truth be told, I don’t think we ever finished a Monopoly game. We’d play a lot of card games too, and Tripoley was our favorite. We had great fun, but as soon as the weather cleared up, you can bet the game was forgotten and we were back outside.

These days, my summers aren’t quite as rambunctious as they were in my youth, but I still like to spend my days outside when I can. I can’t run the bases anymore, but I enjoy being outside playing golf. I’ve had a few games this year that went really well. I’ve also pulled my bike out and enjoyed some great rides. After a long winter cooped up inside, it’s great to be able to stretch and enjoy some sunshine. It doesn’t matter what’s going on in my life; being outside in the fresh air and bright sun always makes me feel better. This summer, I encourage you to take a page from your childhood and spend a little more time playing outside. –Dr. Stuckey

Prom Safety

4 Tips to Keep Your Child Safe

Seeing gorgeous dresses, fancy suits, corsages, and boutonnieres pop up in advertisements can only mean one thing: Prom season is here! This time of year, teens are busy choosing the perfect dress or suit to wear, finding a date, making dinner reservations, and preparing for an evening of fun and dance. During this exciting time, give your teens a little encouragement and guidance to ensure they have a safe and memorable evening. CREATE A PLAN Create a plan for prom night, and make sure everyone knows what it is. Your teen should know and communicate with you what time the dance starts, what time it ends, if they’re going anywhere after, and when they’ll be coming home. PHONES Make sure your teen’s phone is completely charged in case they need to reach out to you sometime during the night. Encourage your teen to check in once every few hours, and establish an emergency code to use if they find themselves in trouble. DRIVING You and your teen should also have a plan about the modes of transportation, who’s driving, and how many people your teen is

going with. Trusting the driver is important. If you’re hesitant

about letting your child be driven to prom, find another way. If your teen is driving the family car, confirm that they will be the only person driving the vehicle.

DRESS SAFETY Make sure your teen is dressed comfortably and appropriately to ensure they have a fun night without any accidents. Encourage them to wear comfortable shoes that they can walk and dance in without pain. High heels are fashionable, but they shouldn’t wear heels so high that they may fall and hurt themselves. Whatever your teen decides to wear should be comfortable and hemmed to the appropriate length based on their height.

By keeping these safety measures in mind, your teen will have a wonderful and safe evening!

Love What You Do Marge Shaw Makes the Most Out of Life

How does someone find a career they love? It can be a challenge. A lot of people spend their whole careers in a job they don’t enjoy. Marge Shaw doesn’t have this problem. Now a dental assistant at Briarfield Dental, Marge has been in the dental field for 34 years. “I always knew I wanted to do something in the medical field,” Marge says. “I just didn’t know what. Growing up, I considered becoming a nurse. Fortunately, I had an aunt who was a

Plus, it’s great to have a captive audience to talk to!” In addition to being a chairside dental assistant for Dr. Stuckey, Marge is also a compliance officer for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This means that it’s her job to help prevent needless injuries by making sure the office is safe and compliant with OSHA. She’s very busy, but she still goes out of her way to help out. On busy days, you can count on Marge to be there to lend a hand and lighten the load. When she’s not in the office, Marge is busy as a wife and a mother. Her daughter just graduated from high school, and Marge has had her hands full planning the graduation party and helping her get ready for college. Life can be busy, but Marge is the sort of person who takes advantage of every moment. This is why her favorite piece of advice is, “Make the most out of each day; you never know if tomorrow’s going to be there.”

Shame-Free Dentistry

Why the Best Dental Professionals Will Never Make You Feel Inadequate

It’s normal to feel the jitters before you head to the dentist. This nervousness is nearly universal, especially for new patients. But if there’s one feeling we don’t want you to ever worry about before making your way into our office, it’s shame. All too often, patients put off going to the dentist because they feel guilty about the condition of their teeth. Maybe they’re worried about being subjected to another lecture on proper flossing or have forgotten to brush for so many days that they feel embarrassed having somebody examine their gums. For someone who is so self-conscious about their smile that they hide it day in and day out, it can be terrifying to imagine a trained professional taking a long, hard look at their teeth. But make no mistake: Dentists are there to help, not humiliate. Any dental professional worth their salt will never, ever make you feel ashamed about your smile. After all, it’s in the best interest of doctor and patient to keep you as comfortable and happy as possible during your visit. Dentists know that the surest way to keep patients from coming through their doors is to make them feel guilty and inadequate. That’s why those long-winded lectures from down high are largely a thing of the past in the dental field and have been replaced by cooperation and compassion.

And if you think your teeth are somehow the worst the dentist will have ever seen, think again. Dentists see hundreds of patients, each with their own struggles and concerns, and many of their conditions are more serious than you can imagine. They’re not about to wag their fingers and judge you. Instead, they’ll do everything they can to restore your confidence and guide you down a proper treatment path to long-term dental health. Shame is far too common among dental patients, but it doesn’t have to be. Come visit our office and experience what positive, guilt-free dentistry can do for you!

Don’t Miss Kids’ Day

Dr. Stuckey’s Playlist It was a long winter; the kind of cold, icy weather that almost had me singing the blues! While we’re enjoying much nicer weather now, I’m still in the mood for blues. This month, I’ve been listening to a blues band from Kansas City called Trampled Under Foot.

Great Blues to Banish the Winter Blues In 2000, they formed Trampled Under Foot, a blues band that covered a wide variety of songs. Many of their tunes sound very blues-rock, but they also play soul blues, gospel, and Memphis blues. Danielle has an amazing voice that really captures that soulful sound of good blues music. Their first, self-titled album came out in 2006. They’ve released a number of albums over the years, but my favorite is “Badlands,”

Have you heard about Kids’ Day? Once a month, Briarfield Dental Care throws a special celebration focused exclusively on our youngest patients. The office is transformed with fun decorations, the whole team gets dressed up, and there are lots of prizes for kids who come in to join the fun. Plus, we have special spin brushes and offers on sealants and mouthguards only available during our Kids’ Days.

Though I just discovered this group recently, they’ve been making music for years. The

original members of the group were three siblings, Danielle (lead vocals and bass), Nick (guitar), and Kris Schnebelen (drums). They grew up in Kansas City, Missouri, and come from a family of musicians. Their maternal grandmother was a jazz singer who played with Count Baise

which won Contemporary Blues Album of the Year at the Blues Music Awards in 2014. “Badlands” was also the last album Trampled Under Foot released. The band split up in 2015, though Danielle and Nick went onto have solo careers and are still making music.

and their father, Bob Schnebelen, played blues guitar in a local band in Kansas City. The siblings were exposed to blues music when they sat in at their father’s jamming sessions.

If you need a good blues session, I highly recommend putting on Trampled Under Foot. Start with their songs “Bad Feeling” or “Wrong Side of the Blues” and watch where their sound takes you.
