These skills aren’t typically taught in traditional school curriculums, but they are a priority at the Anne Arundel County Career Center. The Career Center is a partnership that includes Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation (AAWDC) where job seekers have the opportunity to learn essential career skills to help them reach their full potential. Individuals are provided with up-to-date skills and certifications, and leave ready to contribute to businesses and communities throughout the region. “AAWDC’s mission is to enhance the economic vitality of Anne Arundel County by leading the development and delivery of workforce solutions for area businesses,” Kirkland J. Murray, president and CEO of diplomas — successful business leaders need to know how to think critically, communicate effectively, analyze data, and more. AWWDC, said. “We ensure that our residents are well-prepared for the workforce, ready to work and equipped with skills in demand by businesses.” AAWDC training receives input from businesses to guarantee that everything AAWDC participants learn is what businesses need in successful employees. “Businesses drive what we do — all of the training and guidance we provide job C areer skills include more than high school and college

seekers is based on current demand that we gather through business partnerships and meetings, in addition to labor market research of trends,” Murray said. “We have a wide variety of initiatives and services that ensure every business and individual is receiving customized services to build their success.” All the varied business and job seeker services and staff are now housed in one St. John Properties facility. “In order to fulfill our mission, we needed a space that could accommodate both business and job seeker services all in one location,” said Move Project Lead Bekki Leonard from AAWDC. “With the new space, the Career Center acts as the hub for all workforce/talent services for the county.”

Large, flexible meeting areas are important to how workforce development operates. “The center has seven large rooms that are used for workshops, training spaces and for hiring events,” Leonard said. “The center also has a resource center where individuals can access computers, printers, phones and a fax machine to help with their job search. The Workplace Excellence Café also provides a comfortable open space where businesses or job seekers can bring their devices, connect to the center’s public Wi-Fi and work in a professional environment.” With this St. John Properties location, businesses can better meet their hiring needs, center staff can best serve clients and job seekers can learn invaluable skills to improve their careers and the communities where they live.
