Double burglary night

ROCKLAND | He managed to get away at the start but police in Rockland caught up in the end with a suspected drunk driver from Ottawa. James J. Archambeault, 24, of Ottawa fac- es Criminal Code charges of impaired driv- ing, dangerous driving, and evading arrest, and also two charges under the Highway Traffic Act of failing to provide identifica- tion to police when asked and distracted driving. The charges resulted from an incident Oct. 20 when a Rockland OPP officer found a vehicle stopped in the middle of St-Lau- rent Street. The vehicle’s lights were on and

when the patrol car approached started to drive off. Police got the vehicle pulled over soon after and during a talk with the driver, the odour of alcohol was noted. When asked for his licence and other documents, the driver put the vehicle in drive and sped away. Pursuit failed to bring the vehicle to a stop again and police lost sight of it soon after. The driver was later tracked down and arrested using information collected during the original encounter. Archambeault is scheduled for a provin- cial court appearance Nov. 20 on the charg- es.

broke into the Rockland Museum building on Laurier Street. The thief left with some cash and a laptop computer. No specific cash amounts in either case were included in the police media report. Anyone with information about either of these burglaries can call Const. Charlebois at the Rockland OPP detachment at 446- 5124 or the CrimeStoppers toll-free confi- dential tips line at 1-800-222-8477. A burglar bagged some good booty with a daylight break-in. OPP Const. Marc-André Desjardins is in- vestigating a Sept. 24 break-in during the day at a home on Du Quai Avenue in Wen- dover. Police believe the burglar entered through a basement window. Missing items include two HP laptop computers. One is a Pavilion type with a black body and white cover, while the other is a Notebook with a black body. Also missing is a Canon PowerShot cam- era, with a light-blue body, a PlayStation 3, complete with cables and a blue-coloured controller, and a Call of Duty 2 videogame. Police are dealing with a rash of burglaries in Alfred-Plantagenet Township. During the first half of October the OPP have received calls of several break-ins to homes in the villages of Wendover and Al- fred. The burglaries are taking place during daylight hours but police have released no further details. Homeowners are advised to take standard simple precautions to reduce the chance of a break-in at their residence at any time. Make sure doors and windows are closed and locked and that there is adequate and working security lighting for the yard. Avoid bragging about the purchase of any new and expensive items. Maintain close ties with neighbours to provide an unofficial community watch against anyone lurking in the area. If strang- ers are sighted acting in a suspicious man- ner note down any physical details, includ- ing clothing, and if a vehicle is in use, write down the licence plate along with notes about the make, model and colour of the vehicle to report to police. Avoid confront- ing strangers if possible. Phone the police. When going out for the day or longer, ar- range for a trusted friend or neighbour to visit the premises and check that things are secure and to collect mail and newspaper deliveries. Daylight robbery Burglar warning

Police have two burglary cases that may or may not be linked. OPP Const. André Charlebois fielded two break-and-enter calls Oct. 19. Both were within a block of each other on Laurier Street in Rockland The first call concerned a burglary at the Café La Roche sometime overnight between Oct. 18 and 19. The thief got in through a side window and left after emp- tying out the cash register and a charity do- nation box. Some time that same night someone
