Malcolm Salmon: On the road to Romania

RDHS emerged first in its pool at the tour- nament after pounding Lisgar 15-3 in the game opener then losing by one try a 20-15 match to Napanee and making up for that by pounding Kingston’s Queen Elizabeth Vocational Institute 25-10. The championship finals match put RDHS against Nepean High School. The home- town team took down the Wildcats 20-10 for the tournament title. of November for a two-day to meet and train with the rest of his new U18 team- mates and also enjoy watching their senior counterparts butt heads on the rugby turf in a match between Canada and New Zea- land. On November 7 Salmon and the rest of the U18 team fly out to Romania for a best two-of-three encounter with that country’s nationa U18 squad. On the field Salmon is swift and steady, able to score goals or take down an oppos- ing player with a hard tackle. But he sees his strength as being “a playmaker”, helping to set up a situation on the field for one of the other stronger players to score the goal. “If things come up then I’ll go for the point,”he said.“But I’ve never see that as be- ing my main goal.” Salmon hopes to continue his rugby ca- reer at the university level in B.C. Meanwhile Rocklanders who would like to meet him in person and wish him well can head over to Boston Pizza on Oct. 29 where he will be the “celebrity server” for the evening. A portion of all food sales at the restau- rant between the hours of 5 pm. and 8 p.m. will go towards helping cover Salmon’s ex- penses as a member of Team Canada’s U18 rugby squad.

During the summer for the past couple of years Salmon has fed his passion for rugby by playing for Newfoundland’s U16 and U18 high school provincial rugby teams. Which is how he got scouted for Team Canada. “I did play for Eastern Ontario,” he ex- plained, adding that was limited to the Eastern Canada championships in Nova Scotia. He then took up with Newfound- land’s rugby club so he could play in the na- tional tournament. While in B.C. earlier this
