Presented by Morris to his fellow pre-Raphaelite, artistic collaborator, and business partner, Edward Burne-Jones

37 KELMSCOTT PRESS:

Burne-Jones’s copy is dated a day earlier than that in the copy for Georgiana Burne-Jones. This copy includes the Kelmscott Press book label printed for Burne-Jones of which Peterson states there were 2,000 copies. Peterson notes only ten examples of Kelmscott book labels. This is the only Kelmscott Press book in which Morris included a type not designed by himself. Swinburne’s text required Greek type for quotations and dedicatory poems. Morris therefore employed type from Macmillan and Company, designed during 1892 by Selwyn Image, with assistance from Emery Walker. Wise notes an unfortunate misprint on page 47, where “Deep wells and water floods” reads “Deep walls and water floods”.

First Kelmscott Press edition, one of 250 copies printed on handmade paper from a limited edition of 258, presentation copy, inscribed “to Edward Burne- Jones from William Morris August 10th 1894”. Swinburne’s poem was first published in 1865. The author described the Kelmscott edition to Morris as “certainly one of the loveliest examples of even your incomparable press”. Swinburne admired the Kelmscott Press publications, although, as noted by Peterson, he and Morris only maintained “a friendly but not intimate relationship”. W. S. Blunt recorded in his diary for 1896 that Swinburne and Morris had “not met for years though Mrs. Morris goes now and then to see Swinburne”. The book was announced on 16 June 1894, and published on 24 July. Morris only appears to have presented copies during August 1894. The inscription in
