Mrs. Salter needs little. “I am always happy, as long as I have my books and animals.” Her room is filled with romance novels, which she calls her “sexy stories,” and stuffed animals. She exercises regularly and keeps her hands busy with arts and crafts. Requiring no reading glasses, Mrs. Salter eats “everything and anything,” expressing a fondness for roast beef, seafood, fruits and vegetables.“Her cholesterol level is normal,” relates Dr. D’Ignazio, adding, “We have a lot to learn from her.” Ruth MacLeod Salter was born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. She and Roy Salter were married in 1937 and had two children. She became a bookkeeper with a North Sydney firm. During the Second World War she was employed recording all the ships in convoy coming into Sydney Harbour.

CHUTE-À-BLONDEAU | Don’t worry, be happy. This credo has served Ruth Salter well for more than a century. In fact, Mrs. Salter is living proof that attitude may just be the secret to a long life. “Why be miserable? Just don’t worry,” says the woman who celebrated her 103 rd birthday in February. “She is proving that happiness is a choice,” believes Dr. Joseph D’Ignazio. “Her health is excellent. Her blood tests are incredible. She has a young person’s blood,” adds the owner of Manoir Carillon in Chute-à- Blondeau, where Mrs. Salter has lived for the past two years.
