Healthy Fats for Heart Health

Certain types of dietary fats are beneficial to our health. Every person is unique in their nutrition needs, but it is generally recommended that about 20 to 35% of your calorie intake come from fat. Choose monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats, limit saturated fats (10% or less of your calories) and avoid trans fats. Here are some examples of how you can incorporate healthier fats into your diet:

Omega-3s Omega-3s are a type of polyunsaturated fat that can be beneficial for health, but must be consumed through food, as the body cannot make them. You can find omega-3s in: Fatty Fish – Salmon, sardines, herring, trout, mackerel (canned options available). Walnuts – Eat as a snack or add to breakfast.

Flaxseed – Choose ground flaxseed for better absorption; mix into baked goods, yogurt, or oatmeal. Chia Seeds – High in fiber and protein; can be added to various foods. Omega-3 Enriched Eggs – Check labels or buy from local farmers.
