HISTORY OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (DR) ALUMNI CHAPTER

The initial petition team of Sherman Larkins, Rickalan O’Riley and Thelonius Alexander worked tirelessly to recruit and reclaim brothers, ignite within those brothers that “Good Ol’ Kappa Spirit ”, and breathe a bre ath of life into a dream to bring the idea of a chapter of the fraternity in the Dominican Republic into fruition. As a result, the manifestation of a viable chapter in the Dominican Republic was birthed and the Dominican Republic Alumni Chapter was provisionally approved during the Grand Board of Directors meeting on May 31, 2019. Here is a summary of the timeline of events: January 2018 - While visiting the Dominican Republic (DR), brothers from California and Detroit met at a local restaurant on the island. During their meeting, it was apparent that a significant number of brothers both traveled to and lived in the DR - and the idea of forming a future DR Alumni Chapter was born. March 31, 2019 - The initial petition, which included a total of 21 brothers, was submitted to the Western Province for the Santo Domingo/Santiago Alumni chapter. June 2019 - The Grand Board provisionally approved the petition with the following recommendations: 1) the name would be Dominican Republic Alumni and 2) the chapter would be in the jurisdiction of the Southern Province (“SP”). During the transition from the Western P rovince to the Southern Province, Southern Province Polemarch Bertram Orum recommended that the petition be initially approved as the Dominican Republic Alumni Association (“DRAA”, the “Association”). This would ensure that the interested brothers could be given an opportunity to work towards obtaining a charter that would be sustainable. November 2019 - Sherman Larkins, as Vice Polemarch of the DRAA, attended and represented the Association at the Southern Province’s C. Rodger Wilson Leadership Conference (CRWLC) in Orlando.

9

January 18-21, 2020 - the DRAA held its first annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration weekend along with the association’s first meeting in the DR. The weekend events were attended by over 40 Brothers. Also in attendance on a site visit were Southern Province Polemarch Bertram Orum and Senior Grand Vice Polemarch Linnes Finney Jr. February 2020 - The DRAA Board voted to allow additional Brothers and prospective charter members to join the Association while it was undergoing revisions to the petition. April 6, 2020 - The revised petition was submitted to Southern Province Polemarch Orum along with chartering dates of June 27th, July 25th or August 15th, 2020. The revised petition included 81 Brothers, and its approval was contingent on the improved status of the then existing Covid pandemic, approval of the Province Polemarch, International Headquarters (IHQ) and the Grand Board. November 1, 2020 - The final petition was submitted to Southern Polemarch Orum along with a proposal to have a virtual Chartering ceremony take place before the end of the year. 102 Brothers strong were part of the final petition, and it consisted (in part) of:

• 42 Reclaimed Brother

● 44 Life Members

• 22 Expatriates

● 1 Subscribing Life Member

From the time the initial petition was submitted in March 2019, a tremendous amount of time, work and effort was devoted to ensuring that today’s chartering of the Dominican Republic Alumni Association would become a reality. Also, during that time, it is important to note that the DRAA functioned as a fraternity association while complying with all chapter financial and reporting requirements, held monthly meetings, and participated in community service activities. The Dominican Republic Alumni Chapter is being chartered today with 66 chartering members. The membership consists of:

24 Life Members

● ● ●

1 Subscribing Life Member

22 Expatriates

Special recognition goes out to Brother Linnes Finney, who has stood by and supported the DRAA from its inception and to Brother Rhen Bass who advised us throughout the process. We extend a special thanks to Southern Province Polemarch Chauncy E. Haynes for having confidence in the DRAA - and for partnering with us in our quest to become chartered as the Dominican Republic Alumni Chapter.
