Before you get started, indulge us in some words of caution: First, make sure your doctor has cleared you for rigorous exercise. Second, it’s always smart to be evaluated from a qualified trainer at your gym, golf club, or the Gary Player Fitness Centre at The World of Golf in Gauteng. Finally, listen to your inner voice and know your limitations. The amount of resistance you choose, the number of sets and reps, and the fre- quency of your workouts should always be kept in mind when building a pro- gramme. Progress slowly.

Knowing that, here is a starter kit for an exercise programme that will boost your golf performance and help you avoid injuries. Add these nine exercises to your cur- rent workout or use them to create a new fitness plan. They were selected by two of Golf Digest’s Best Fitness Train- ers in America, Sheldon Roberts (right) and Andrea Doddato (opposite page). Both train golfers in the Los Angeles area and met up with us to demonstrate moves that focus on these goals: • Improve mobility and stability • Boost strength and power • Train in all three planes of motion (forward and backward, laterally and rotationally) • Challenge the muscles and soft tissue that matter most in the golf swing
