CANCER COMEBACK BOUNCE BACK STRONGER THROUGH PHYSICAL THERAPY

Coming back from cancer can be a long road, especially for the many patients who deal with the discouraging after-effects of the disease and its treatments. In recognition of June as Cancer Survivors Month, this is a good time to consider how physical therapy can help patients recover. Physical therapy has many benefits for survivors of cancer of the breast, ovaries, prostate, and bladder. Through a personalized exercise and therapy program, a skilled physical therapist can help reduce swelling and fatigue, improve balance and mobility, and recover strength and the ability to participate in everyday activities. Lymphedema is a common side effect of breast cancer. Surgery and chemotherapy can disrupt the functioning of the lymph system, causing swelling in the arms, legs, and other parts of the body. A physical therapist can improve circulation through massage, wrapping, and exercise, helping you begin moving flexibly and comfortably again. Cancer of the prostate, bladder, or ovaries can lead to weakness in the pelvic floor, which in turn harms a person’s ability to maintain normal urinary or sexual functioning. Physical therapists trained in pelvic floor therapy can work with you to rehabilitate your pelvic floor muscles and regain those functions.

General fatigue, exhaustion, and

weakness associated with cancer surgery, chemotherapy, or

radiation treatment can be taxing. We work with patients on a customized treatment plan to rebuild strength, endurance, and mobility and to reduce breathlessness.

We also can assist our patients in spotting early signs of cancer. While this disease is enormously complex and has multiple causes, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle are among the triggers. A planned, customized exercise program can help you improve your odds of remaining cancer-free.

Call us today for an assessment. We will be happy to work with you to recover from cancer treatment and chart a healthier path ahead!
