Adviser Autumn 2017

“We wanted to fuel ambition, support and empower the farmers whilst engaging our customers with the farming process. So, we started a mission to cut out the middle men - no more brokers, shipping agents or conglomerates.” Harvest your own coffee The Kenyan initiative is centered on a groundbreaking community-driven venture which has been under development for the last twelve months. Launched this autumn, anyone can become part of the Paddy & Scott’s collective, and will receive individual shipments of ground coffee throughout the year, from their own registered tree on one of the finest coffee farms in Kenya. Scott explains: “We’re shortening the distance between you and your coffee. And enabling you to be part of something that’s never been done before.” The Meru Farm Project is s a unique venture led by Paddy & Scott’s, with the local Kenyan community reaping the benefits. It includes the provision of support for the future education of coffee farmers by setting up a model working farm at Ruiga School to teach children modern coffee farming methods. Part of this project has involved providing a 6.6 km water feed, storage tanks and a new brick toilet block with washing facilities. The proceeds from the sale of the school farm coffee are being used to provide much-needed school places for parents who cannot afford to send their children to school.

Don’t just buy the coffee, be part of the farm There are four thousand individual trees within the Meru Farm Estate. Members will receive their Membership Box including a farm pass card (you’ll need this card to access the farm if you ever visit) tree plot number, branded reusable steel coffee container, a limited-edition Meru Farm Project Cup, and a shipment of single origin ground Kenyan coffee to try whilst you register your plot and agree your shipping dates for 2018. How it all started Expanding from roasting coffee beans in an old two-kilo roaster named “Old Smokey” in a Suffolk garage, to producing over 90,000 cups of coffee per day, Paddy & Scott’s is one of the region’s great success stories. They now operate over 150 branded concessions across the UK with trade exports to Hong Kong, Shanghai and Moscow and have recently started exporting to the Middle East. “The secret behind our success is a lot of energy, passion and good old hard work. People seem to like our honesty and values. It’s taken a lot to get this far and we’re incredibly proud to be part Suffolk’s global food and drink industry,” says Scott Russell, founder and CEO of the business. The Farm - a coffee revolution Paddy & Scott’s are leading the way in the coffee industry with a pioneering Kenyan Farm Project which revolutionises how you buy your coffee. “Sustainability and protection of our environment are important, so too are the communities that rely on the coffee plantations for their existence,” explains Scott. He recognised that the only real way to help the coffee farmers and their wider community was to go straight to the source and pay more for the raw product.
