Learning about common types of breast cancer
According to the Canadian Cancer Society, one in eight women will develop breast cancer at some point in their life, and one in 33 will die from it. Additionally, an estimated 240 Canadian men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and about 55 of them will die from it. Since October is Breast Cancer Awar- eness Month, here are four ways you can get involved in the cause to eradicate this disease. 1. MAKE A DONATION You can make a one-time donation or a mon- thly contribution to the Canadian Cancer So- ciety to help fund breast cancer research and initiatives that provide resources to people li- ving with breast cancer. 2. In an effort to raise awareness, here is a bit of information about the two most common types of breast cancer and their main characteristics. 1. DUCTAL CARCINOMA This type of cancer, which originates in the milk ducts of the breasts, can be divi- ded into two categories. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a non-invasive variety WKDWUHPDLQVZLWKLQWKHGXFWWLVVXHV,QYDVLYH RULQ¿OWUDWLQJ GXFWDOFDUFLQRPDLV more aggressive and involves cancerous cells that have traversed the duct walls and invaded the surrounding breast tissue. Invasive ductal carcinoma is the most common type of breast cancer, accounting for about 80 percent of all invasive cases. 2. LOBULAR CARCINOMA

This type of breast cancer develops in the lobules, which are the milk-producing glands at the end of the ducts. As with the ductal type, lo- bular carcinoma can be in situ or in- vasive. The latter is the second most common type of breast cancer, ac- counting for about 10 percent of all invasive cases. The non-invasive va- riety is sometimes referred to as lo- bular neoplasia because it’s not a true cancer. Rather, someone with this diagnosis is simply at a higher risk of developing breast cancer due to ab- normal cell growth.
