May 2024 TPT Member Magazine

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA Spring certainly arrived early in Minnesota this year – but there is still something wonderful about May as my garden is awash in color and scents, chalk drawings from neighborhood kids decorate sidewalks and we finally put the canoe out on the St. Croix River. This month at TPT, we turn our attention to new programs that match the vibrancy of the season. Premiering this month is a new season of fan-favorite Relish , hosted by the always delightful Chef Yia Vang of Union Hmong Kitchen and the soon-to-open Vinai. Chef Vang serves as the ultimate guide for viewers who seek to learn about, appreciate and understand diverse cultures through the power of epicurious storytelling. He is also an expert at drawing out personal anecdotes from area chefs as they prepare and share ingredients and dishes representing their own cultures. Relish is truly a feast for the senses! Six new episodes begin streaming May 10 on the PBS App and TPT.org/relish , and you can learn more about Chef Vang on pages 6 & 7. Relish is made possible by Minnesota's Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund. May also marks the start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and we will showcase the one-and-only George Takei in the new film To Be Takei . The documentary chronicles the actor’s journey from his childhood in a World War II Japanese internment camp in California to the helm of the Starship Enterprise on "Star Trek," and along the way, becoming a cultural icon who brings wit to his millions of social media fans. The film airs on Tuesday, May 28 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2. Earlier in the month, drama fans will have the opportunity to enjoy a new limited series from Masterpiece . MaryLand follows the story of two estranged sisters who reunite in the wake of their mother’s sudden death and the discovery that she lived a secret double life on the Isle of Man. The series premieres on Sunday, May 5 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2.
