Dear Friends of Madonna Mission,
I am delighted to share Madonna Mission’s Annual Report for 2023, a year of tremendous growth with so much to celebrate. Along with our growth, we are proud to share with you the evolution of our programming over the last year and the stories of successful acclimation of newcomers into their new community.
Globally, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) anticipates a 20% increase of refugees in need of resettlement services in 2024. In 2023, enrollment in Madonna Mission classes increased by 54%, and we expect this growth to continue. As always, Madonna Mission will continue to open our doors as a safe and compassionate space where women and children learn English skills, understand cultural norms, and build a future through our academic programs. We are so grateful to have had the extra space that St. Jerome’s has offered these past 3 years. Thank you for your support in making that happen. Believe it or not, in a few short years we have already outgrown our space here. We continue to address the needs of space creatively, working within our limitations, as we endeavor to not turn anyone away. Not only do we need to adjust to our growth in enrollment, we also want to respond to the requests of our clients by expanding needed educational programs such as job training skills. As we look ahead to continue our mission of empowering through education and community, we are proud of what we have accomplished and resolute in our determination to continue to build a sustainable home for Madonna Mission.

Our classes are filled! Our hallways are buzzing! The number of people we serve has more than doubled since 2020. Thankfully the Madonna Mission community continues to grow. Our tutors, partners, donors and volunteers are dedicated to opening doors for refugees through education. Each member of our community plays a critical role in helping refugees succeed. We are united by our shared values of compassion, empathy, and a commitment to the belief that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or circumstances. The Madonna Mission community is working to ensure that refugees have the support and resources they need to build a better life for themselves and their families.

English As A Second Language (ESL)
Madonna Mission’s ESL program provides refugee women with English language acquisition through a personalized curriculum that includes one-on-one tutoring and classroom instruction. We break down barriers that would prevent women from learning critical English skills by providing childcare and bus fare free of charge. Women can enroll as long as they need in order to achieve their personal goals, which may include communicating with doctors and their children’s schools, attaining employment, or passing the U.S. citizenship test. Our ESL program gives refugee women tools for self-empowerment and self-sufficiency.

In 2023, we hired our first ESL Director, Sarah Levinson. Sarah has a graduate degree in education from John Carroll University, and has been teaching ESL for 10+ years. Now, Madonna Mission is able to offer a summer ESL class to ensure the continued progress of students’ language acquisition, academic-year classes taught at different levels and conversation groups to provide students with an encouraging outlet for their newly acquired English skills.

Why Three Generations of One Family Love Madonna Mission By Mary Wagner
It's 7 pm and your son or daughter is struggling with a homework assignment. It’s an essay, or prep for an upcoming test. You look over their shoulder and point out what they might have missed or tease out answers with nudges and hints. But what if you were unable to help them study? And what if that meant that you saw your most cherished dreams for your child’s future slipping out of reach? The language barrier is formidable for refugee families who come to Chicago from all over the world. Over the past 12 years, donor- funded work of Madonna Mission has broken though that barrier with programs that make the critical difference in helping refugee children to succeed in classrooms, and their parents to successfully resettle in a new country thousands of miles from home.

Leterbirhn Naizgi’s home country is Eritrea, which borders on Ethiopia to the south and the Red Sea to the east. This 75 year-old grandmother is one of three generations of the Berhane/Naizgi family who say their life in Chicago would be vastly different if not for Madonna Mission. It’s where Leterbirhn learned to hold a pencil and wrote her name in English for the first time. Her granddaughter, Betlehem Berhane, 15, translates her grandmother’s native Tigrinya speech. “She’s grateful for the help that Madonna Mission has given because they understand our schoolwork,” Betlehem said. “Our parents don’t understand and can’t help us.”

Betlehem’s own story is a case in point. Now fluent as a teen and doing well as a junior at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, she had difficulty with English when she was younger and had to repeat the third grade. With the help of tutors in the Madonna Mission’s After School Program, “The second time was much better,” she said. “I was able to learn.” Rahaset Naizgi, Betlehem’s mother, and her husband were the first family members to reach the U.S. Fleeing a repressive Eritrean government, they arrived in Chicago in 2009 with Betlehem and her older brother, Mikiyas, sponsored by the Ethiopian Agency.

Rahaset recalled not knowing what life in America would be like but knowing that it would be difficult at first. She recalled stepping off the plane, her first air flight, into the cold shock of a Chicago winter and worrying that her children might freeze. Since then, life has changed for the better for every generation of the family. The tutors of Madonna Mission’s English as a Second Language program work with Rahaset and her mother on reading and speaking skills. As graduates of the Madonna Mission After School and Summer Learning in Action programs, the family’s two oldest children are thriving at one of suburban Chicago’s leading Chicago prep high schools. And thanks to the dedicated volunteers of Madonna Mission – and the vital support of its donors – the refugee parents who came to this country with little except their hope for a better education for their children are seeing that hope become a reality.

After School Program (ASP) The Madonna After School Program (ASP) is a high-impact, after school initiative for refugee students in grades K-8th. Our students receive literacy support, homework assistance, nutritious snacks, safe transportation home and the companionship of other refugee children. This program welcomes and empowers students while catalyzing academic achievement, enhancing language literacy and building healthy confidence.

In 2023, the Assistant ASP Director role was added to manage the growing enrollment numbers while also deepening our engagement with teachers and parents. This has enabled us to develop more targeted learning plans for each student and provide more comprehensive academic and social emotional support. “Madonna Mission serves as an integral part of our CPS students’ education. They get very excited on the days they attend the Madonna Mission after school program as they tell me with a big grin, ‘Ms. Kim, we are going to Madonna Mission today. Another highlight of 2023 was the expansion of our High School Prep Program (HSPP) with our 7th & 8th graders. Mentors provide individualized attention to middle schoolers as they research, identify and apply to area high schools, as well as connect to scholarship opportunities for private and parochial schools. HSPP is incredibly important because this level of personal assistance is not offered by the schools, so it falls to the parents, many of whom do not speak English and would not be able to navigate the system. We believe our students should have access to the same opportunities as other students.
Learning In Action (LIA)
Through this summer program, 1st-8th grade students participate in reading and writing projects, arts and culture, outdoor play, field trips, swimming lessons, and experiential learning. Lack of discretionary income prevents these students from attending other summer programs. The LIA initiative focuses on continued academic growth, language building tools, and socialization through the summer. These programs help close the learning and achievement gap for low income, non-English speaking students by providing academic summer support.

1st to 3rd graders participated in an Olympic project where groups selected a country and learned about its flag, language(s), leaders, athletes and other important cultural aspects which they presented to the entire class. “I had so much fun at the Oympics! In particular, the summer allows the High School Prep Program (HSPP) to continue the focus on the 8th graders by administering high school practice entrance exams, essay writing, mock interviews, scholarship applications and research for potential high schools.

Fun and Connection Make the Grade at Learning in Action Summer Program: Bunmi’s Story By Mary Wagner
Twenty year-old Bunmi Igiehon always thought of himself as “a quiet guy” when facing new people or situations. But four years as a Madonna Mission Learning in Action (LIA) Program summer counselor have helped him unearth some superpowers.“This was my first job,” said the Nigerian-born college junior. “When I first came to the camp, I was a little nervous. But over time I saw that when I would start doing an activity, the kids would watch what I’m doing and try to copy me. I learned to set an example for the kids. I can also learn in life to set a good example for other people.”
Leading others by example is one key skill Bunmi has tackled and continues to develop. He learned this through his experience as a camp counselor, and also modeled on what he saw as a student in Madonna Mission’s After School Program (ASP). Bunmi arrived in Chicago at the age of two, along with his mother and an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. As with other refugees fleeing war-torn or impoverished countries, they came in search of better opportunities in the U.S. In sixth grade Bunmi came home from school one day to find his mother had signed him up for the Madonna Mission ASP. For the first time, homework wasn’t a solo activity – instead, he was surrounded by other students and supported by Madonna Mission’s many volunteer tutors. “Learning and doing homework – Madonna Mission made it fun,” he said. After graduating from elementary school, he enrolled in Chicago’s Rickover Naval Academy, a military-style Chicago public high school focused on college prep. With the onset of the COVID pandemic, he transferred to and later graduated from Mooseheart Child City and School, a suburban residential school sponsored by the Moose fraternal organization. Madonna Mission offered him a job as an LIA Program summer camp counselor when he was 16. He thought hard about the challenge of taking on kids in a classroom – a new type of role for him -- and decided to see it as an opportunity. Bunmi remembered a group of high school students from Loyola Academy in suburban Wilmette who helped him out at ASP when he attended the program. They were “super interactive,” he said, good at turning homework assignments into games, and good at putting a smile on a struggling child’s face while guiding the way through math or reading problems. So, Bunmi learned to be more open and interactive with the young campers. Getting some of them to do stuff took a while. “You had to build a little bit of a relationship with them first,” he said. But it taught him about the power of connecting with others as a way to motivate them. Next summer, Bunmi hopes for an internship to further his studies in marketing at Northern Illinois University. With an interest in urban street style, he dreams of his own clothing brand some day and wants to understand how to run a business. He’ll have his time at Madonna Mission to help him get there. “It was a good experience to know that you have people who want to engage with and want to see you grow,” he said. “Madonna Mission helped me be a better person.”
