Amazon Generates Massive Plastic Waste by Greg Kishbaugh O ceana has released a report based on an analysis of e-commerce packaging data that found Amazon gen- erated 211 million kilograms of plastic

Casella Publishes Sustainability Report Casella Waste Systems, Inc. published its 2020 Sustainability Report, outlining the company’s progress toward its sus- tainability vision, and sharing a roadmap for the next ten years. Casella reportedly established the first recycling facility in Vermont in 1977, was a charter member of the EPA Climate Leaders program, and this report is the company’s fifth biennial report on its sustainability activities. Making Goals With this report, the company announc- es ten sustainability goals for the year 2030. While some goals focus on less- ening negative impacts (e.g., reducing Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions), many of the goals focus on amplifying beneficial impacts (e.g., increasing tons recycled to 2 million tons per year, and doubling the company’s renewable ener- gy production). One goal aims to grow the company’s Net Climate Benefit Factor, a measure of the climate benefit of its recycling, ener- gy, and sequestration activities divided by its scope 1 and 2 emissions. The compa- ny, using USEPA factors, calculates that it currently reduces or prevents 2.9 tons of emissions for every ton it emits, and aims to grow this factor to 5x by 2030.

packaging waste last year. This in- formation, combined with the staggering amount of primary corrugated packaging used by the company, draws at-

tention to an environmen- tal dilemma that must be addressed.

The plastic packaging is comprised of the air pillows, bubble wrap and other plastic packaging items added to the approx- imately seven billion Amazon packages delivered in 2019.The Oceana study also estimates that up to 10.18 million kilograms of Am- azon’s plastic packaging waste entered and

polluted the world’s freshwater and marine ecosystems in 2019. Amazon’s footprint in Canada, the report found, was disproportion- ately large, generating an estimated 21.3 million kilograms of plastic waste in 2019, which is 1.2 times more than in India, and more than Japan, Brazil, Spain and Mexico combined. The online retail giant has cornered 48 percent of the Canadian e-commerce market, with esti- mated sales in 2019 exceeding $9 billion (CDN). “Amazon is ubiquitous in Canada. Unfortunately, so is plastic pack- aging, which makes up about half of our total plastic waste,” said Josh Laughren, Executive Director, Oceana Canada.“Given how much val- ue Amazon is getting from Canadian consumers — including from people in remote communities where few other options are available

Audit Finds Chicago Does Not Enforce Recycling Ordinance An audit performed by the City of Chicago Office of Inspec- tor General (OIG) has found that the Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) does not ensure owners of commercial and high-density residential buildings with five or more units provide recycling services as required by the Chicago Re- cycling Ordinance. The city is required to provide buildings found in violation of this requirement 30 days to come into compliance; continued noncompliance can result in fines ranging between $500 and $5,000 per day. Additionally, the OIG audit concluded that DSS does not ensure that private haulers submit complete, accurate and timely reports detailing the buildings they served, and the amount and type of materials hauled. The city of Irvine, California, and a coalition of six cities in Sonoma County will take on local redemption challenges by launching state-approved pilot projects designed to make it easier for consumers to cash in their empty bottles and cans. Irvine’s newly approved program allows for scheduled pick- up and mail-in or online redemption. The Sonoma County program establishes 10 new bag-drop locations in suburban and rural parts of the county where consumers can leave tagged bags of material for electronic payment. — it has a moral obligation to offer plastic-free packaging to ensure this doesn’t come at a great cost to the health of our oceans and environment.” “The amount of plastic waste generated by the compa- ny is staggering and growing at a frightening rate,” noted Oceana’s Senior Vice President, Matt Littlejohn.“Our study found that the plastic packaging and waste generated by Amazon’s packages is mostly destined, not for recycling, but for the landfill, the incinerator or the environment includ- ing, unfortunately, our waterways and sea, where plastic can harm marine life. It’s time for Amazon to listen to its cus- tomers, who, according to recent surveys want plastic-free alternatives, and make real commitments to reduce its plas- tic footprint.” The report discloses that the type of plastic often used in packaging byAmazon, referred to as plastic film, is effective- ly not recycled, despite the company’s claims of recyclabil- ity. Most municipal curbside recycling programs in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom do not accept this kind of plastic. The report also found that: • Amazon customers overwhelmingly want the company to reduce plastic packaging. Issues of sustainability remain high in consumers’ minds and it appears the excessive packaging is a concern to them. Oceana surveyed more than 5,000 Amazon customers in Canada, the United States and the UK in 2020 and found that 86 percent were concerned about plastic pollution and its impact on the oceans; 92 percent were upset that plastic recycling does not work; and 87 percent wantedAm- azon and other major online retailers to offer plastic-free packaging choices at checkout. • Unlike other companies seeking to move away from plastic,Amazon appears to be prioritizing the increased use of “flexible packaging” made of plastic. It has stated it uses flexible packaging to help protect the climate and environ- ment, but has not publicly disclosed the data underlying this claim or its plastic footprint. • Amazon has already shown it can rapidly reduce plastic packaging on a very large scale. After India passed a law to fight plastic pollution,Amazon eliminated plastic packaging from fulfillment centers in India and has introduced a pa- per-based lightweight mailer that it reports has been used 100 million times. Amazon has failed to apply these clear steps forward on a company-wide level to solve its plastic problem, the Oceana report states. • Amazon’s plastic waste and pollution footprint is ex- pected to drastically increase, given analysts’ recent esti- mates that the company sales will increase by more than a third in 2020.

Central Ohio Seeks To Boost Curbside Recycling The American Beverage Association (ABA), in partnership withThe Recycling Partnership and SolidWasteAuthority of Central Ohio (SWACO), announced that Pleasant Township and the city of Whitehall are receiving an investment under the Every Bottle Back initiative, a sustained effort to reduce the industry’s use of new plastic and keep its bottles out of the environment. Collectively, the two communities will receive grants to- taling more than $250,000 from SWACO and The Recycling Partnership, including $116,800 invested through Every Bottle Back. These grants build on the beverage industry’s commit- ment to enhance the collection of recyclable materials, like its fully recyclable bottles, in key regions across the United States and The Partnership’s efforts to bring access to recy- cling across the country and catalyze a circular economy. The collective investment will help pay for 7,300 new re- cycling carts, enough for every household in both commu- nities, and fund technical program assistance, education and outreach about the new collection process. “This critical, regional investment will yield 15.1 million new pounds of materials collected over 10 years – includ- ing 592,000 pounds of fully recyclable polyethylene tere- phthalate (PET) plastic and 227,000 pounds of aluminum,” said Kimberly McConville, executive director of the Ohio Beverage Association.

Republic Gas-To-Energy Project Expands

Republic Services Inc., Phoenix, and Aria Energy, Novi, Michigan, have announced an expansion of the landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) project at Republic’s County Line Landfill in Argos, Indiana. The project, which began operating in 2014, was expand- ed to 7.6 megawatts from 6 megawatts, increasing its use of biogas by 25 percent. The project expansion directly supports Republic’s com- mitment to divert 50 percent more landfill gas to beneficial reuse by 2030, the company said. Generating Electricity Aria developed, owns and operates the LFGTE project at the County Line Landfill. The electricity generated from the project is sold to the Wabash Valley Power Alliance un- der a long-term power purchase agreement. The expanded County Line LFGTE facility is capable of generating enough renewable energy to power more than 4,800 area homes annually. Based on Environmental Protection Agency calculations, the expanded County Line LFGTE project prevents carbon emissions equivalent to the consumption of more than 43 million gallons of gasoline annually. The EPA estimates that 7.6 megawatts of energy produced from landfill gas equates to a total equivalent emission reduction of over 44,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

Greenpeace Sues Walmart For Deceptive Recyclability Labels Greenpeace Inc. filed a lawsuit in California Superior Court, alleging that Walmart has employed unlawful, unfair, and deceptive business practices by incorrectly labeling and advertising its various private label throwaway plastic products and packaging as recyclable. Through the suit, Greenpeace is demanding that Walmart remove false and misleading labels stating that its disposable plastic products and packaging are recyclable, when they are not. Green- peace alleges that Walmart has violated California consum- er protection laws, including the California Environmental Marketing Claims Act (EMCA) which regulates deceptive environmental marketing claims. Greenpeace’s complaint states that Walmart’s recyclabili- ty claims are false, misleading, and deceptive because most consumers in the State of California do not have access to facilities that are capable of segregating the products from the general waste stream to be recycled. Moreover, there are no end markets to use the plastics to manufacture new items, so they are destined to end up in landfills or the nat- ural environment. Wastequip Acquires ContainerPros Wastequip, Charlotte, North Carolina, has acquired Carls- bad, California-based professional waste services company, ContainerPros. This strategic acquisition enhances the existing cart assem- bly and delivery service offering provided byWastequip’sTot- er brand over the past several years by adding a team with more than 20 years of experience in providing cart assembly, delivery and maintenance services for waste haulers and mu- nicipalities. Additionally, the acquisition lays the groundwork for Wastequip to include the repair and refurbishment of steel containers as part of its service offering. Earlier this year, Wastequip launched its Wastequip WRX facilities to expand its field service capabilities for truck mounted equipment. The WRX facilities offer parts, service, and installation for most types of waste handling equipment with additional locations planned in the coming months. Following the close of the deal, ContainerPros founding partners, Mark Merhab and Gary Lima, will remain with the company. VLS Recovery Acquires JBR Environmental VLS Recovery, a Houston-based provider of waste manage- ment, rail car cleaning, and barge cleaning and repair ser- vices, has acquired JBR Environmental Services (JBR).Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Based in Spartanburg, South Carolina, JBR provides waste management, industrial cleaning and other environmental services to customers in the Southeast. As part of the transaction, JBR’s facility will operate within the VLS waste division and JBR President Rex Russell will continue to run the business.

The FPSA is committed to reducing food waste from man- ufacturing and the supply chain and repurposing any un- avoidable waste that cannot be eliminated into renewable energy via Vanguard Renewables’ farm-based anaerobic di- gesters. The FPSA members also commit to begin exploring the process of decarbonizing their thermal energy usage by converting to farm-derived renewable natural gas. In the United States, more than 40 percent of all food pro- duced ends up being discarded. While eliminating that waste is a priority, some of this unavoidable food waste is still sent to landfills or incinerators, but can be repurposed to produce renewable energy. Vanguard Renewables uses anaerobic di- gesters situated on farms to capture this energy and generate renewable natural gas or renewable electricity to be used in homes and manufacturing plants across the nation. Moreover, the process produces low carbon fertilizer that host farms use to support regenerative agriculture practices while it sup- ports the American farmer with a diversified income stream. Vanguard Renewables has seven operating facilities in the Northeast and more than 20 “Farm Powered” anaerobic di- gester facilities in permitting and development nationwide.

TerraCycle Raises $25M For Loop Global Holdings TerraCycle, which serves as a Trenton, New Jersey-based manager of Loop Global Holdings LLC, has completed a Se- ries A capital raise of $25 million for its global reuse plat- form, Loop. According to the company, investors include P&G, Nestlé, SUEZ,Aptar, Sky Ocean Ventures, ImpactAssets and Quadia. Loop was founded and is managed by TerraCycle, which operates specialty recycling services in 20 countries. Loop works with consumer product companies, retailers, cities and facilities to recycle products and packages that would otherwise be incinerated, including contact lenses, beauty care products, coffee capsules, oral care products, cigarette butts and PPE. In The Loop Launched in May 2019, Loop enables consumers to shop for products in durable packaging that is used, cleaned, re- filled and used again, and then fully recyclable after 20 to 100 uses. According to the company, it enables brands to develop more valuable and distinctive products and packag- ing and provides consumers with more beautiful, function- al and “milk-man model” deposit and return packaging. To date, Loop has enlisted over 100 brands globally and offers more than 400 products. Loop is available in the continental United States, the Unit- ed Kingdom and France. By the end of 2021, Loop will also be operating in Canada, Japan andAustralia and will be avail- able in approximately 1,000 retail stores in five countries. Connecticut Waste To Energy Facility To Close Tom Kirk, President and CEO of Connecticut’s Materials Innovation and RecyclingAuthority (MIRA), announced that the state’s Hartford-based waste to energy facility will close by July 1, 2022, at the latest. The closure date is dependent, in part, on future opera- tional and maintenance costs. MIRA represents 51 municipalities in Connecticut. The or- ganization, which was created by the state in 2014, is the successor of the Connecticut Resources RecoveryAuthority (CRRA). The CRRA was created in 1973 to help the state divert material from landfill through the development of a network of resource recovery facilities. MIRA’s board took an initial vote to close the Hartford plant earlier this year and transition it to a transfer station after financing prospects and subsidies for the organization dried up.The facility has recently suffered from mechanical failures and other issues due to its age.The state rejected a $330 million proposal to upgrade the aging trash incinera- tor earlier this year. The Hartford plant incinerates between 600,000 and 720,000 tons of waste annually. With MIRA planning to shut down the Hartford facility by July 2022, the organization is still contractually obligated to manage waste for 50 of its member communities through 2027.
