WINTER RACE SERIES
Established by the Victoria Racing Club in 2009, the Winter Race Series brings together races like the Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Final (1600m), which had been run since 1979, and a number of other finals for horses young and established, both sprinters and stayers. To qualify for Flemington Finals Race Day on Saturday 1 July, which offers $1.53 million in prizemoney, horses must earn their way into the finals by competing in heats right across Victoria. Horses that finish First and Second in nominated heats will be exempt from the ballot in the respective final. Who will be the next star to emerge?

WINTER RACE SERIES
CRESWICK SPRINT SERIES (New series for 3YO sprinters) This series is aimed at three-year-old sprinters, with heats over distances between 1000m-1200m, conducted at venues including Flemington, Sandown and Caulfield. It is named in honour of Sir Alexander (Alec) Reid Creswick (1912–83), who was a member of the VRC Committee for 24 years, from 1959 until his death in 1983, serving as Chairman 1969–77. His great-great-grandfather Henry Creswick had been a foundation committee member of the Victoria Racing Club in 1864. Sir Alec was a fine horseman himself—Master of the Melbourne Hunt Club, a leading polo player, head of the Equestrian Federation of Australia and a practical supporter of successful Australian participation in successive Olympic Games. He bred and raced many fine racehorses, including champion filly True Course. The final, the $175,000 Listed A.R. Creswick Stakes, is run on Flemington Finals Race Day over 1200 metres, with an honour roll including Nature Strip, Gytrash and Passive Aggressive.
SANTA ANA LANE SPRINT SERIES Formerly the All Victorian Sprinters Series, the series was renamed in honour of five-time Group 1 winning sprinter, Santa Ana Lane, trained by Anthony Freedman. Santa Ana Lane amassed more than $8 million in prizemoney, winning Group 1 races in NSW, SA, QLD and the Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic here at Flemington. Santa Ana Lane was retired a happy and healthy eight-year-old and now
resides at Living Legends, located at Oaklands Junction. This seven-heat series attracts the fastest winter sprinters and features three heats up the famous Flemington straight with heats also conducted at Sandown and Swan Hill, before culminating in the $175,000 Listed Santa Ana Lane Sprint Series Final on
Flemington Finals Race Day. TAJ ROSSI SERIES
This series targets later-developing two-year-olds who are suited to the longer distance of 1600m of the Listed Taj Rossi Series Final and is named after Taj Rossi, the outstanding performer trained by the legendary Bart Cummings. When the son of Matrice was bought by Cummings in 1972 at the Adelaide Yearling Sales for $18,000 (top price) and then sold to prominent owner Victor Peters,
neither could envisage the heights to which Taj Rossi would rise in his short but spectacular career. Beginning his racing as a two-year-old in Adelaide, his first two wins came in moderate company in the winter of 1973 at Flemington. In the spring he ran second at Moonee Valley. Then followed a dazzling sequence in which he won six of his next seven starts including the Ascot Vale Stakes, Moonee Valley Stakes, W.S. Cox Plate, Victoria Derby, George Adams Hcp and Sandown Guineas. Said Bart Cummings: “All along I have said that he is one of the best, if not the best, three-year-old that Australia has known in the last 50 years”. This magnificent group of victories secured for Taj Rossi the award of Racehorse of the Year for the 1973-74 season. Cummings had great respect for Taj Rossi, who was retired to stud as a four-year-old, siring among others, Taj Eclipse, the winner of the 1983 VRC Oaks and yes, owned by Mr and Mrs Victor Peters.

WINTER RACE SERIES
VRC-CRV WINTER CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES This series for open milers takes in heats at Sandown, Swan Hill and Flemington, attracting the most in-form gallopers over distances from 1400m-1600m and bringing them together for the $200,000 Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Series Final here on Flemington Finals Race Day. BANJO PATERSON SERIES
This series is for open stayers and is named in honour of revered author and poet Andrew Barton ‘Banjo’ Paterson, who had a lifelong love affair with horses. Polo matches, picnic races and riding his own pony were all part of his early life in country NSW. After moving to Sydney and qualifying as a solicitor, he began submitting poetry to The Bulletin under the pseudonym “The Banjo”, the name of a racehorse his father had owned. His various careers included jockey, horse trainer in the Middle East during WWI and racing journal editor, but it’s his wonderful bush ballads and poems – such as The Man From Snowy River – that truly reflect
his equine passion. In 1886 he published A Dream of the Melbourne Cup ; the first of many racing ballads, including Old Pardon , the Son of Reprieve , The Open Steeplechase , Rio Grande’s Last Race and The Wargilah Handicap . NEXT GENERATION SPRINTER SERIES This series for two-year-olds was introduced to showcase young up-and-coming sprinters and provide an opportunity to gain valuable experience up the unique Flemington straight. The intention is to contribute to the development of the next generation of Australia’s world-class sprinting talents. The series takes in heats at Flemington, Caulfield, Sandown and Mornington, and the $150,000 final is held over the famous Flemington Straight Six course. LEILANI SERIES
This series for fillies and mares is named in honour of Leilani, another Bart Cummings-trained champion who left an indelible print on Australian racing. She won the 1974 AJC Oaks before transforming into a dominant four-year-old race mare, winning the Turnbull Stakes, Toorak Handicap, Caulfield Cup and Mackinnon Stakes in the spring of 1974, before running a gallant second to stablemate Think Big in
the Melbourne Cup. In the ensuing autumn, Leilani won the Orr Stakes, St George Stakes and Australian Cup, among other races. Winning 14 of her 28 starts, Leilani was a horse that Cummings was very fond of; so much so that he named his Sydney stables Leilani Lodge in her honour. Although Cummings was not one to talk much about his horses – especially those in the past as he preferred to look forward – it is well-known that he had huge respect for Leilani, known as a great horse with great fight. Leilani was raced by prominent Melburnians, The Hon Andrew and Mrs Susan Peacock as well as Mr Ian and Mrs Liz Rice. *The Leilani Series, and the former three-year-old fillies series, the Rivette Series, have been combined with heats for fillies and mares to be conducted at Flemington, Sandown and Caulfield.
10
WINTER RACE SERIES
SILVER BOWL SERIES This series is for three-year-old milers with heats over distances of 1300m to 1600m held across Melbourne at Flemington, Caulfield and Sandown. The final is a $150,000 quality handicap for three-year-olds over 1600m on Flemington Finals Race Day. THE MAHOGANY CHALLENGE
Introduced in 2019, the Mahogany Challenge was created to showcase developing stayers in Victoria. The series is for three-year-olds and takes in heats at Flemington and Sandown, before culminating in the final on Flemington Finals Race Day. The series is named after the mighty Mahogany, who was raced jointly by Hall of Fame owner Lloyd Williams and businessman Kerry Packer, and trained by the
all-conquering Lee Freedman. He won eight Group 1 races, including both the Victoria Derby and Australian Derby as a three-year-old, and was named the Australian Racehorse of the Year for the 1993-94 season. Known as one of the most versatile gallopers in Australian racing history, Mahogany won four of his eight Group 1s at Flemington, including the Lightning Stakes in 1995 and 1997. FOR BART & ROY Taj Rossi THE BEST 3YO
By Joe McGrath
Lunar Flare’s recent run away victory on the Andrew Ramsden Stakes brought fond memories of one of the great horses of the modern era, Taj Rossi. Here’s a closer look as to ‘why’. When reflecting on his stellar career, former champion jockey Roy Higgins would always talk of Light Fingers and Red Handed. His two Melbourne Cup winners from 1965 and 1967 respectively. When talking about other very good horses he rode – and there were many – he would always pause before talking about Taj Rossi. For some reason there was a deep appreciation of a horse with a constitution unseen in most thoroughbreds. As sited in a biography written by Patrick Bartley called Roy Higgins – Australia’s Favourite Jockey (2014) a chapter was dedicated to Taj Rossi, Tontonan and Leilani. On Taj Rossi he rated him as the best three-year-old he ever rode: ‘His spring was incredible’ Higgins reflected in 2009 after another Cummings trained star, So You Think, won the Cox Plate. ‘His only real failure, if you could call it that, was a fourth in the Caulfield Guineas. I settled third on the fence and that’s where he finished, under a stranglehold. ‘I was waiting for something to move but nothing did. I was climbing over their backs. I said to Bart (that) he could have won by two lengths.’ 1 Next start he took on the older horses at Moonee Valley in the W.S Cox Plate (2000m) then reverted back to his own age group in the Victoria Derby (2500m) a week later. He would then drop back to a mile one week after that to run in the George Adams Hcp (1600m) and then go on and return to his own age group in the Sandown Guineas (1600m) the following week. He won them all! In a spring that was extraordinary, Taj Rossi went on to be judged Australian Champion Racehorse for the 1973 – 74 season. 2023 marks the 50 year anniversary since the son of Matrice dominated the Melbourne racetracks. Arguably, we are yet to see his like again. Bartley’s recount of Taj Rossi goes on to document: ‘Taj Rossi won nine races from 21 starts with most of them coming from his three-year-old season and earned this plaudit from his trainer: ‘All along I have said that he is one of the best, if not the best three-year-old Australia has known in the last fifty years.’ 2

Cummings would also say in his autobiography titled Bart - My Life (2009): “There was nothing Taj Rossi couldn’t do that spring (1973). I thought Taj Rossi was the best three-year-old ever to have raced, certainly the best I’d trained, and believed that the sky was the limit for him. But he caught a stomach virus the next autumn and just wasn’t the same.’ 3 Taj Rossi was raced by Melbourne businessman Victor Peters who, along with his wife Lila, also raced the very good Fulmen back in the late 1960s. Their colours of white with the brown circles would become synonymous with quality throughout the late 1960s, 1970s and early 80s. They mainly raced horses in their own name and found their way into the top echelon of races across the country. There was a Cummings connection throughout. Feature races were not unfamiliar to the Peters owned horses. The Peters would later establish Fulmen Park on the Mornington Peninsula named after their first racehorse, a winner of 8 stakes races including the Brisbane and Adelaide Cups. Taj Rossi was retired to stud in 1975 and leased to Spendthrift Farm, Lexington, Kentucky in the US for a couple of seasons. He would return to stand at Dr Phil Redman’s Turangga Farm in Scone, NSW with the best progeny to include Taj Eclipse (1983 VRC Oaks) and Taj Quillo (1986 VRC Gadsden Stakes) both raced by the Peters family. He’d also sire the popular 1989 AJC Doncaster Hcp winner, Merimbula Bay. He died at the relatively young age of 15 in 1985. Interestingly, through the Grahame Begg trained Lunar Flare, a dominant winner of the 2022 VRC The Bart Cummings (G2) at Flemington and more recently the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (LR) by 5 and a half lengths, we have seen a return of the famous Peters colours. This has come about via part-

owner John Valmorbida who is married to Michelle, a daughter of Vic and Lila Peters. The Peters and Valmorbida families have been long-time friends for many years. Lunar Flare is also raced by Frank Kraps and long-time successful owner and Melbourne real estate authority, Jack Bongiorno.
“There was nothing Taj Rossi couldn’t do that spring (1973)” - Bart Cummings
From a breeding perspective, Taj Rossi was by Matrice, a high class sprinter miler which would win the 1956 SAJC Goodwood Hcp as well as the 1956 VRC Cantala Stakes and the 1956 and 1957 VRC Linlithgow Stakes. He sired 24 stakes-winners including Taj Rossi, Manihi, Toltrice, Pago Pago and La Trice – all high-class performers. From Dark Queen (by Coronation Boy), this is a thoroughbred family which would hold special importance for both the Cummings and Peters families as it would see horses the ilk of Taj Rossi; Saintly (1996 VRC Melbourne Cup; MVRC W.S Cox Plate); Storm Queen (1966 STC Golden Slipper; VATC Caulfield Guineas etc) and even Stormy Passage (1958 SAJC SA Derby) emerge. Stormy Passage being the first Melbourne Cup runner for Cummings back in 1958. It would also produce Dark Eclipse, a winner of the 1980 STC Golden Slipper. On talking further about Taj Rossi, Bart Cummings had this to say in a book written by the great Les Carlyon called The Master (2011). “He (Taj Rossi) was a great type, except for a plain head, an inheritance from his boof-headed father Matrice. More importantly, he was tough, incredibly so. He hit his head on the starting stalls before the Caulfield Guineas, bringing up a lump as big as a cricket ball, yet still ran fourth. During the spring he just kept walking up, week after week, and winning. He won the
20
TAJ ROSSI Victoria Derby, the Sandown Guineas and Ascot Vale Stakes against his own age. Against all comers he won the Cox Plate and George Adams Handicap (now the Kennedy Champions Mile) at Flemington.” 4 On the 1st July, Flemington will once again host the final of the Taj Rossi Series – a $160,000 Listed race held over 1600m for 2YOs. There will be two heats conducted at Flemington (20th May and 17th June); two at Sandown (31st May and 14th June) with further heats conducted regionally in Swan Hill (9th June) and Bendigo (18th June). Whilst there have been many horses grace the hallowed turf at Flemington, few could do it in the manner that Taj Rossi did. He raced in an era which included other top 3YOs the like of Imagele, Grand Cidium and Leica Lover. Through the popular Taj Rossi Series, his memory lives on. 1. By Michael Manley Peter Mertens VALE
The outpouring of emotion for Peter Mertens this week perfectly captured the immense popularity of the former top jockey within the racing industry. Riders, owners, friends, and trainers have united to pay tribute to the 58-year-old, who tragically lost his battle with pancreatic cancer last weekend. And it’s not surprising, as those fortunate enough to have met or known Mertens can attest to his genuine smile and sincere interest in others. Mertens’ riding career exemplifies the classic late-bloomer success story, with his peak period as a jockey beginning in his mid-30s. He commenced his apprenticeship with trainer George O’Mealey at Sale before transferring to Lloyd Timbs. Gippsland served as his base throughout his career, where he achieved remarkable success and earned the moniker ‘The King Of Gippsland’ due to his unrivalled number of wins in the region. Despite a setback – a broken neck in 1988, leading to a 14-month hiatus and a stalled career – Mertens’ return in the early 1990s signalled a hunger for success, and the country wins started pouring in once again. City trainers began to take notice, none more so than the budding Mick Price. Their collaboration proved formidable, with both making waves in the 1990s. Together, they celebrated their first Group 1 victory when Rustic Dream triumphed in the 1999 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield, marking Mertens’ inaugural win at that level at the age of 34. Price also gave Mertens his first Melbourne Cup ride on Toll Bell in 1994. Mertens ultimately rode in five Melbourne Cups, two of them on a horse named Big Pat, trained by Peter Tulloch. One of his seven Group 1 wins came aboard Big Pat when they claimed victory in the South Australian Derby in 2001. Two years later, Mertens rode Big Pat again in the Melbourne Cup, this time for his close friend Robbie Griffiths, who had taken over training responsibilities for an ownership group led by his then-manager, Deane Lester.

Mertens’ final Melbourne Cup ride in 2005, aboard the $201 outsider Envoy, marked a career highlight. Although he couldn’t keep up with the eventual winner, the magnificent Makybe Diva, Mertens piloted his mount to a commendable seventh-place finish. The overwhelming sound of the crowd as Makybe Diva crossed the finish line created an indescribable feeling for Mertens, a sensation he had never before experienced on a racetrack. Under the guidance of the legendary Bart Cummings, Mertens secured victories in the 2007 Mackinnon Stakes and the 2008 Australian Cup on Sirmione. However, another devastating injury at Hamilton in 2013 ultimately brought his career to an end. In total, he amassed 2157 wins. Following his retirement, Mertens transitioned to running a pre-training farm in St Leonards before trying his hand at training, although he did not achieve any victories in that role. Leading the tributes to Mertens was Robbie Griffiths, who knew him for over 40 years, having ridden against him and provided him with more winners than any other trainer. Griffiths fondly remembers Mertens as an absolute “superstar of a guy”, cherishing the many great times they spent together. Matt Hyland, CEO of the Victorian Jockeys Association, praised Mertens’ gallant fight against his illness and acknowledges his impact on the Victorian racing community and beyond. Trainer Mick Price, who trained Mertens’ first Group 1 winner, sees echoes of the talented jockey in his son, Beau Mertens, a 25-year-old who has already amassed 564 victories. Price recalls his personal and professional experiences with Mertens, describing him as “a lovely man”. “I have very fond memories of him personally and professionally. I spent a lot of time with Peter in the early days,” Price said. “I see Beau a lot and Peter comes to mind more and more. I have a great association with Beau. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” At the end of April, a lunch was held to celebrate Mertens’ life and he was in great spirits. Price said he was lucky enough to be there and everyone who was there felt privileged to have spent time with the jockey.

• 2156 wins • 7 Group 1 wins • 5 Group 2 wins • 16 Group 3 wins
