SEPTEMBER 2024

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA Fall is in the air (although as I write this it is still very much summer)! September is back-to-school month and ushers in a nostalgia for smells and textures: crayons, No. 2 pencils, tempura paints, chalk ...at least for my generation. Growing up on a farm, I also remember bailing hay (and hayrides) and watching my mother preserve every vegetable and fruit to tide us over during the winter. The air smells earthy, and as an adult living in the city, I visit nearby apple orchards, and continue mom’s tradition of canning apple butter and jelly. We are excited about a lot of new programming this fall that will inspire all lifelong students who turn to TPT to satisfy their endless curiosity. "Ken Burns: One Nation, Many Stories" takes viewers on a journey through the latest documentary films from "America's Storyteller." The special features highlights from his recent works, including "Country Music," "Muhammad Ali," "Benjamin Franklin," "The U.S. and the Holocaust," "The American Buffalo," "The Vietnam War," and more. Tune in on September 5 at 7 pm on TPT 2. On September 15 at 8 pm, we are airing "American Masters: Julia Alvarez," which explores the life of the Dominican American poet and novelist who has blazed a trail for a generation of Latino authors. This new documentary offers an intimate look at her journey from an idyllic, privileged childhood in the Dominican Republic to a life of exile in New York City and a brilliant literary career that continues to flourish today. We will also premiere the latest season of "Relish" on September 23 at 8 pm for our broadcast viewers. Hosted by the acclaimed Chef Yia Vang, this series, which premiered on the PBS App in May, features local chefs and food makers who take Chef Vang and viewers on a culinary journey exploring the globe right in our own backyard. Then, on September 24 at 7 pm, "Frontline" debuts "The Choice 2024," a special feature offered each presidential election cycle, providing in- depth analysis and insight into the candidates and their campaigns as we head into the November election.

Ken Burns: One Nation, Many Stories

American Masters: Julia Alvarez

As always, thank you for your incredible support. Your dedication allows us to continue bringing quality programming to our community.

A Conversation with Kelly Bigler TPT’s Vice President of Marketing, Communications, and Brand Strategy shares her department’s vision for the future BY KEVIN YANG

In February of 2024, Twin Cities PBS welcomed Kelly Bigler, Vice President of Marketing, Communications, and Brand Strategy. In her role, Kelly oversees the Marketing, Communications, Events & Community Outreach, Creative Services, and Sponsorship teams within the station’s MarComm department. We sat down with Kelly to learn more about her department’s goal to connect TPT’s mission with our audiences. Can you tell us about your experience prior to joining Twin Cities PBS and what drew you to come work at Twin Cities PBS? I have nearly 20 years of marketing and communications leadership experience in corporate, agency, and non-profit settings, serving a variety of audience segments and industries. Before joining Twin Cities PBS, I spent over 10 years at The Walt Disney Company where I led multichannel partnership marketing campaigns and developed integrated strategies supporting the Disney Parks & Experiences division. I have a BBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MBA from the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota). I am thrilled to work at a mission-driven organization like Twin Cities PBS, which already has such a well- respected brand in the community. Every single staff member demonstrates a passion for storytelling and carries a deep-rooted responsibility to serving our existing audience while increasing accessibility and relevance with new audiences. What roles do marketing, communications, and brand strategy play in ensuring that Twin Cities PBS fulfills our mission to our community? We are focused on developing our respective areas of expertise as a service department that supports all facets of Twin Cities PBS.

The three pillars of my role at Twin Cities PBS – marketing, communications, and brand strategy – bring to life the inspiration and connection people feel when they view our programming, experience our events, and engage with our brand across digital touchpoints. Just as stated in our mission, I believe this has the power to transform lives and strengthen our community. Now that you are several months into your time at TPT, what has most impressed you about the work that our station does? I am most impressed with the breadth, scope, and quality of our work at Twin Cities PBS. It extends beyond television and truly makes a difference in our community. What are some exciting opportunities for how we can strengthen our approach to connecting with our audiences? I look forward to connecting with current and prospective Twin Cities PBS supporters in unique, innovative ways. This could include refreshing our approach to digital and social media, forging new strategic partnerships to reach diverse audiences, and showing up more consistently in the community. What is the most important message you hope that our audiences understand about the work we do at Twin Cities PBS? The mission matters, and it is infused into everything we do. We care deeply about the community and believe in the power of public media. I am honored to play a role in bringing TPT’s stories to life for our audiences.

Exploring Diverse Paths to Retirement By Olga Lucia Torres

My immigrant Latino parents never spoke to me about money. Their emphasis was always on education. I had to go to college, end of discussion. But when I got to college, I knew nothing about savings accounts or high-interest-rate credit cards or how debt can ruin your life. I'm in my early 50s and have only recently paid off my decades of accumulated debt and started saving for retirement. We need to learn about money and what to do with it, but the purveyors of such wisdom are a rare commodity in Black, indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) communities. Information about saving, investing and retirement needs to be passed down from generation to generation, according to Mark Willis, a retired Morgan Stanley financial executive. "If you don't have that resource of historical knowledge within the financial markets, you're prone to operate on whatever information you hear on the media outlets you use," he says. One-third of Black investors said they invested in something based on information they saw on social media, compared with 20% of white investors. According to the FTC, financial scams, including cryptocurrency schemes, cost consumers $3.8 billion last year just in the U.S., twice as much as in 2021. The U.S. Federal Reserve's latest Survey on Consumer Finances showed that 57% of white families had savings in retirement accounts, compared with only 35% of Black families and 26% of Latino families.

"Growing up in the projects, there wasn't anyone really saving or investing for retirement," says Joanne Garce-Rodriguez, director of diversity initiatives at New York University. "It was really just surviving the month with the income you would receive either through low-wage work or public assistance. If you did have a job with a pension, that was retirement for those few. Everyone else just expected Social Security." The reliance on Social Security and other government programs for retirement income can differ among races and ethnicities. Historically marginalized communities may depend more on these programs due to limited employer- sponsored retirement plans and/or personal savings access. Understanding the impact these programs have on retirement security is essential in addressing disparities.

Ken Burns on ‘Our America’ By Richard Harris

Next Avenue: How did you whittle down to 251 the photographs [from 1839 to 2019] that are now between the hardcovers of your book, representing what you call Our America? Ken Burns : I collect quilts. No amount of research can really reveal the story behind each quilt. Each has a unique provenance that will remain unknown. How old was Hannah, the girl who may have signed it? Was she married? What is the story behind this quilt? I spent all of my professional life investigating and finding out what the facts are, what the truth is about certain events, and then trying to fashion them into stories that reflect that. This book was like the quilts, an ability to go back to the DNA of all my work, which is the still photograph. I wanted to produce a volume that treated each photograph as an event — one photograph per page with the most minimal captions, then in relationship to the other photograph across the page, whether there's compositional similarities or thematic similarities or where there's just kind of architectural similarities, they begin to speak to each other.

For the better part of a half century, Ken Burns has been on a mission to tell America's story, warts and all, taking us on a deep dive through the Civil War, Country Music and the U.S. and the Holocaust, among his more than three dozen documentaries and series. But to understand why he's been scratching this itch since the seventies, all you need to do is read the introduction to his 2022 coffee table book, “Our America: A Photographic History." Burns’s love affair with the still photograph — what he calls the DNA of his life's work — began in his dad's Delaware darkroom when he was three. He recalls being held in his father's "strong left arm, watching a wonderful alchemy take place, as an image began to slowly emerge from a blank piece of photographic paper immersed in a tray of strong-smelling chemicals, under a dim eerie red light. To a three-year-old it seemed like magic."

Make Your Own Colorful Papel Picado BY JESSICA MARTINEZ

In “Rosie’s Rules,” when Rosie Fuentes and her family get together for a party, you might notice bright, colorful banners hanging around their home. These banners are made with papel picado, a traditional Mexican folk art in which images or patterns are cut out of tissue paper. You and your child can make papel picado at home using just a few materials. Folding and cutting squares of tissue paper will reveal beautiful and unique patterns — and the possibilities are endless!

2. Fold the tissue paper in half from side-to-side, then fold it in half from top-to-bottom, just to the top of the bottom border you’ve created. 3. Cut out shapes from the sides of your folded paper. Try making triangles, semi-circles, snip off corners, or cut out half-heart shapes. Use a pen to draw shape guides if your child could use them. 4. Open the tissue paper to reveal the pattern. As you look it over with your child, try to figure out which snips resulted in each shape! Next, grab another square of tissue paper and do it all again. For one banner, you’ll need about 6 pieces of papel picado, but can have more if you like! 5. Once you’ve cut about six sheets of papel picado, you’re ready to assemble the banner. Lay out a length of string or yarn long enough to fit all your sheets. Working with one sheet at a time, spread glue across the very top half inch of the papel picado. Lay the string on top of the glue, then carefully fold the tissue paper just over the string. Repeat with each sheet of papel picado, spacing them about an inch or two apart. Hang your papel picado banner wherever you need a pop of color, or at your next family get together!

Materials Tissue paper squares in at least 2 or more colors (10” x 10”, or smaller) Pen Scissors Glue String Directions 1. Start with a square of tissue paper. Create a bottom border by folding the square in half, then in half again in the same direction. Make small cutouts along the bottom of the long rectangle in any shape you and your child like, trying not to cut deeper than 1 inch. For younger children just getting the hang of scissors, use a pen to draw guides for your child to follow.

Explore further at pbs.org/parents/crafts-and- experiments/make-your-own-colorful-papel- picado for step-by-step visuals and more ideas for papel picado!
