THORNTON ROOFING PROVIDED A COMPLETE ROOFING SYSTEM SPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR HIGH-HUMIDITY ENVIRONMENTS AND COPPER CLADDING THAT BEAUTIFULLY MATCHES THE BRICKS OF THE ORIGINAL BUILDING… ROOFING SYSTEM AND COPPER CLADDING
T hornton Roofing (Ireland) Ltd Baths original building and specially for the new extension. The leading roofing and cladding company used Kingspan KS1000TD (Topdek) high-performing flat, single PVC membrane panels, supplied with both a standard liner and AquaSafe liner, also provided by Kingspan. The liners are specially designed for high-humidity environments such as swimming pools, and the PVC-adhered Topdek allowed for the roofs to be quickly closed in and waterproofed to accommodate the famous NI weather. provided a complete roofing and wall cladding system for the Templemore For the wall system, the team at Thornton Roofing opted for a built-up rain-screen arrangement, which included NV1 support brackets and framework grid supplied by Nvelope. The subframe system was fitted to both block and steel and was enclosed with Kingspan K-Roc, a rock mineral fibre
insulation. This provided a flexible and insulated grid to fit the Kingspan Dry- Design cassette system via a mullion and a hook/clip method. For the rainscreen, they used a 3mm-thick Kingspan Dry-Design (hook-on) cassette in 0005 copper. “This is our first time working on a heritage project and it was very exciting to see the transition of the original building and the introduction of the modern structure,” commented Senior Designer Sam Sheils. “Elements of the original build were kept intact, and the new structure with its copper rainscreen complements the environment beautifully.” Sam explained that their contracts and design team would plan as much as possible in the preliminary stages for typical eventualities but, as it happens in any project, there were some issues. However, as a team, they reviewed and addressed them in the most efficient
way possible. The Senior Designer also highlighted the importance of great coordination among the many teams involved. “Coordination with all parties was good and, from a design perspective, I can say all trades collaborated to ensure all interfaces were reviewed to guarantee fluency of the project. All parties were aware of what was expected of them,” he explained. Sam and his team are very satisfied with the final look of the Templemore Baths and the new leisure centre. “A lot of design and planning went into this building but, if it weren’t for the skill set and expertise of Contract Manager Michael Hegarty and Site Manager Brian Johnston, the results would have not been achieved to this standard,” he commented. “Thornton is proud to provide quality service with technical and design support from preliminary stages through to the installation of the product.”
