PROJECT
SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT, QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY, BELFAST
Justin Campbell, Managing Director for HTC Mechanical, commented, “This was incredibly beneficial because it sped up production and installation, reduced the amount of hot work necessary on site and reduced disturbance.” He continued, “During the project, we faced the challenge of working within the current grounds of the existing Riddel Hall building while it remained occupied. In addition to constructing the new school, we had to undertake significant work in the area, which posed its own set of challenges. One of our tasks involved installing the geothermal system on the main lawn. To ensure the integrity of the historic building structure, we meticulously monitored the drilling process for noise, dust and vibration.” The primary heating for the new School of Management involved the installation of a 280kW Ground Source Heat Pump system to provide heating and domestic hot water. Forty sealed, closed loop geothermal probes were installed. The works, undertaken by sub-contractor GeoServ, included the
thermal and mechanical testing of the geothermal probes, the installation of the geothermal collector pipe work connecting the probes to a central manifold chamber and connection to the underground plant room. The geothermal collector will provide a source of energy to the Viessman heat pumps and offers a low-visual impact solution for delivering energy to the new building. Commenting on the completed project, Justin said, “The project’s nature is extremely rare. Queen’s University, Belfast is internationally known and its properties are both historic and infamous. Working within the grounds of Riddel Hall was a unique opportunity, and we are grateful that Felix O’Hare included us in this project. “The building’s design is particularly distinctive, including numerous teaching and resource facilities such as the Mark Piggott Lecture Theatre and a Harvard- style lecture theatre. HTC Mechanical are honoured to have been a part of such a renowned project and would like to thank our site team, particularly
project Foreman Jarlath O’Hagan, on an excellent install.” “We have a great working relationship with Felix O’Hare and continue to do so. The project was a joy to be part of with a great co-ordinated effort from all parties involved, headed up by our Contracts Manager Haley Hawes.”
