Neil Mathews Architects, based in Belfast, has been announced as a finalist for the Schüco Excellence Awards 2023. The awards, in association with Architecture Today, recognise outstanding projects executed with Schüco aluminium and steel systems across the UK and Ireland. Neil Mathews Architects’ project in South Belfast has been shortlisted for the Individual House Improvement category. His contemporary extension to a 1950s house in the Malone Conservation area showcases meticulous craftsmanship, timely execution, and adherence to budgetary constraints. The complex nature of the project required the skilled manipulation of various building materials to harmonise the different spaces seamlessly. “Our team’s dedication, creativity, and attention to detail have enabled us to deliver exceptional results for our clients. Being named as a finalist is a testament to our commitment to architectural excellence,” said Neil Mathews, Principal Architect at Neil Mathews Architects. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 29 June. ARCHITECT SHORTLISTED FOR PRESTIGIOUS SCHÜCO EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2023

MANNOK AND FLSMIDTH CELEBRATE THE WORLD’S FIRST TECH TO DECARBONISE CEMENT PRODUCTION

Fermanagh-based manufacturer Mannok and Danish engineering company FLSmidth have successfully implemented the world’s first pilot of the FUELFLEX® Pyrolyzer. This new combustion system has almost eliminated the use of fossil fuel in the most carbon-intensive stage of cement production at Mannok’s plant, reducing 240 tonnes of carbon emissions per day and NOx emissions. The new FUELFLEX® system is enabling Mannok to replace 90% of its coal use with solid recovered fuels (SRF), which would otherwise go to the landfill, in the pre-

calcination stage of cement production. The company is working towards eliminating the use of coal. “The SRF we use is sourced from the counties surrounding the plant, so we are reducing shipping costs and carbon footprint of imported fossil fuels,” commented Damian Reilly, Cement General Manager at Mannok. “There are obvious environmental benefits and this SRF is a much more commercially viable fuel source. The more SRF we can use in NI, the less will be exported to cement kilns across Europe, so it’s a win-win.”
