A Table in the Presence of Enemies

What were the enemies that David was think- ing about? Did he write this as he was fleeing from Saul? Was he re- flecting on how God al- ways cared for him in the midst of many trials? Did he al- ways have something to eat? Do we have ene- mies today

feed our lusts and keep us from thinking much about God and His truth. The fake news of the media continually tries to tell you what to think. The radio, TV, inter- net, social media, cell phone, etc. all converge to rob us of time to think and meditate on God and His truth. But God has provided us with a table of Spiritual food and nourishment that surpasses the experience I had. God gave us His Word and that Word is a miraculous provision for our souls — a table of many differ- ent kinds of meat and cheese, vegetables, pies, cakes, to meet every need of the human soul. Every day, we are surrounded with phenomena that speak of a Creator God. But who is wor- shipping the Creator? The bursting forth of new life in the spring, the abundant growth of summer, and the ingathering of the fall, and then the beauty of winter, the singing birds, the movement of wind and clouds all speak of a Divine Caretaker! In the midst of all Satan’s host of evil workers and evil ma- chines, God has prepared a table for anyone who wants to nourish his heart. The Apostle Paul writes that man is without excuse to not believe in God be- cause the whole universe

speaks of God’s eternal power and Godhead. Read Romans 1.

God designed man to be the habitation of God. Satan stole the heart of man and now there is a void in every heart until we open our heart to God. The more we put God out of our thoughts, the more shriveled up man’s personality becomes until he can only think of self. The selfishness of humanity as we see it today is a sad com- mentary on the whole world system; the educational system, the religious system, the gov- ernmental system. Selfishness makes it all an enemy of God and true righteousness. Thank God that in the midst of all this, He has prepared a table for us. On that table is the Gospel story of Jesus. It is a story of God’s work from the be- ginning. It is refreshing truth for those who are tired of the enemy trash! “Come and dine, the Master calleth, Come and dine. You may feast at Jesus’ table all the time, He who fed the multitude, Turned the water into wine, To the hungry calleth now, Come and dine!” (C. C. Widmeyer) Rod & Staff Publishers W6053 County Rd. that could keep us from sitting down to enjoy a meal? This is what we want to consider. The Christian has enemies. Jesus said that we would be as sheep in the midst of wolves. What or who are the enemies? Whatever keeps you from read- ing the Bible is an enemy. Our text says “enemies.”

“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine ene- mies.” (Psalm 23:5). A table is where we sit to eat. A prepared table is one that has food on it. Some years ago, I was privileged to be at a table prepared by people of a different culture at Christmas time. It was an experience quite unique. There were at least four kinds of meat and five different kinds of cheeses, various other foods and deserts and there were no enemies present! It was a mem- orable occasion.

It is more than one.

One enemy is Satan. Another enemy is the world. Another enemy is the lust of our flesh, the lust of our eyes and the pride of life. In today’s world we have a host of instruments to
