Come Walk With Us (Part 27)
By Harry and Hadassah Wilkinson June 2024 The town of Sower turned out to be a couple of houses and an aban- doned school building. This could have been a major disappointment, not to mention a real problem, if the Lord hadn’t, once again, taken care of the situation. A man who owns the ground at the old school stopped and talked briefly and offered us a place to camp behind the school. He told us that he has a man living there, in a trailer, and that we should just tell him we had permission to camp for the night. (Matthew 6:8). We asked the man that lived there if there would be a store in the next town, Betty, where we could pick up some groceries and were told the store didn’t carry a whole lot. We said goodbye and walked the 7 miles to Betty. What a disappointment! The store had very few canned goods on a dusty shelf, pop, and a few candy items. They had some loaves of bread in a refrigerator and we bought two because we are looking at 3 more days before we come to a town. We have had some tough days and this one ranks right up there with the toughest. A strong wind made walk- ing very difficult. It was blowing in our faces and we had to lean into it and literally push against it to make any headway. We don’t know how Harry was able to pull the cart except in the strength of the Lord. Hadassah had an extremely hard time keeping herself going and we had to stop fre- quently to rest. Hadassah was very close to sitting down by the side of the road and saying, “I can’t do this anymore!” About 10:00 AM a young man, stopped and talked a little and gave
us some cool spring water. He told us he is a mailman and lives in Tucum- cari. He said he had to finish his
fully. On the way to Tucumcari he told us he had seen us walking this
about telling them they could get a meal at the Senior Center for $1.50 but I didn’t figure they had the money.” John said he was astounded that a person, professing Christian- ity, wouldn’t have asked and then given someone the $1.50, if they needed it. We have met many great people, but there are some that aren’t so great. So...Here we are, in a little house in Tucumcari, New Mexico. Praise our gracious and loving God! Next Day: We didn’t do any walking today but we sure covered a lot of miles. Nearly 100. The ride yesterday to Tucumcari was 40 miles. We are now about 120 miles from where John picked us up yesterday. Praise God! Harry’s back and legs are sore from battling the wind yesterday. We never could have done it again today with- out a mighty touch from the Lord. But then, the Lord did touch us and, in spite of the wind, we covered about 120 miles since yesterday. Praise God! (Philippians 4:19). We had a rough night. We huddled against each other, trying to stay warm, with Shiloh curled up at our feet inside the sleeping bag. Our dou- ble sleeping bag, which was made from very warm blankets by a min- istry in New Mexico, is very cozy but is just not doing the job against these cold, damp winds. The temperature dropped to near freezing during the night. “And I have been with thee whither- soever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee...” (I Chronicles 17:8 KJV). route and go home but would try to come back and give us a ride to the next town. The thought of a possible ride offered some encouragement in an otherwise bleak situation. Just before noon, we stopped to rest at the intersection where we were going to turn and go South. We were wondering if this man would make it back and how late in the day it would be. We didn’t have to wonder long because as we were talking, he pulled in. He had his grade school age boy with him and a large sack of dog food, in case we needed some for Shiloh. He also had a proposition for us. He and his wife hold Bible studies in a small house near where they live, in Tucumcari. We were welcome to go back to Tucumcari with him, spend the night in “the little house,” as they call it, and tomorrow, when he fin- ishes his mail route he will take us to a town in the Oscura Mountains. This would take about 120 miles off our trip. Praise God! We accepted his kind invitation readily and thank-
morning and had spotted the fish symbol, which we have on the slow moving vehicle sign on the back of our cart. He commented he was feel- ing “kind of down” at the time. He thought to himself, “Those people are Christians,” and went on down the road, dismissing us from his mind. He had a bag of knot-shaped pretzels with him and reached for one and took a bite of it. Looking at the re- mainder of the pretzel, he realized it was in the form of a fish. As he looked at this pretzel that looked like a fish he thought, “I have to go back and talk to those people.” As he talked, he reached in the bag of pret- zels, which was still on the dash of the truck, held one up and said, “Now, you tell me how you can get a fish shape out of that.” Hence, our meeting with John. (Romans 8:14). John told us he had stopped at the post office in Betty. The lady there at- tends one of the local churches. He asked her if she had seen us and she said, “Yes, they stopped at the store across the street yesterday. I thought
