Tasmanian Hospitality Review - October/November 2023

WE HAD A GREAT TURNOUT FOR OUR NETWORKING EVENING HOSTING INDUSTRY OPERATORS AT THE FLINDERS WHARF, WITH PLENTY OF TASMANIAN WINE, BEER, GIN AND FANTASTIC FOOD

OUR ON-SITE VISITS INCLUDED HOTELS, CAFES, GUEST HOUSES AND MORE. MERV, NICK AND VAL CALLED INTO CATE COOKS, CAFE AND TUCKSHOP IN WHITEMARK

The purpose of the visit was to understand the needs of the local industry and determine how we, as the peak body, can best provide assistance. Additionally, we took the opportunity to share information about the range of no-cost programs offered by THA, which are available to the entire industry across Tasmania, regardless of THA membership. These programs are funded through government grants to support and benefit the industry:

Darren Martello who quickly became referred to by the group as an ‘island celebrity’ - and it should be noted that he did not dispute this! Based just out of Launceston with a previous career as a hotel owner, Darren resided on Flinders Island a few years ago and his regular visits ensure that operators have a direct voice to the THA. During our visit Darren even had time for a quick stint on the tools: helping to fix a post-mix system and cooking a toastie while delivering a business health check at the bakery. Despite some light-hearted banter from colleagues, the rapport that Darren shares with many operators on the island serves as a great example of what our GCE program can achieve.

Reflecting on our learnings

After covering the length of the island, from Lady Barron to Palana, we reconvened in the evening at The Flinders Wharf to host industry members for conversation, some laughs and a great selection of Tassie wine, beer, gin and delicious food.

As an industry body, so much of our important work is done away from the office. Our successful outcomes are driven by visiting operators in their own venues to learn about their business, challenges and needs. This is where our Great Customer Experience (GCE) program is leading the way, with a team of experienced and friendly staff based around Tasmania to provide a conduit between hospitality operators and THA, allowing us to represent their needs to funding bodies and government.

Continuing the conversation

While CEO Steve Old was an apology for our Flinders Island visit, the THA was very capably represented. A particular mention must be made of GCE team member
